'Don't write off Sonny' - Postecoglou backs Spurs' captain

Bournemouth leapfrogged Tottenham in the Premier League table as the Cherries claimed another home scalp and Ange Postecoglou’s side suffered their sixth defeat of the season.

Dean Huijsen’s free header from an early corner gave Bournemouth the lead and Andoni Iraola’s team were more than deserving of their victory, which adds to wins over Arsenal and Manchester City this season. The hosts wasted several chances to add to the scoreline.

By contrast, Spurs barely troubled Bournemouth’s goal and defeat means Postecoglou’s side are winless in the three games since beating Manchester City 4-0 at the Etihad, as their inconsistent campaign continued.

Tottenham could have gone 5th with a win but instead it is Bournemouth who climb to 9th in the table, ahead of Spurs in 10th. Spurs visit high-flying Chelsea on Sunday while Bournemouth go to Ipswich.

Bournemouth 1-0 Tottenham

61 mins: Much better again from Spurs, as Maddison goes close. Son finds the clever pass through and Maddison almost pulls something from nothing as he turns and bends the shot towards the far post.

It goes just wide.

Worry for Spurs, though. Davies is down and Postecoglou is already without Romero and Van de Ven. Porro is coming on and Gray is going to have to do a job next to Dragusin.

Bournemouth 1-0 Tottenham

58 mins: Spurs have the ball in the net! Almost an immediate imapct for Son but he’s offside. It’s better from Spurs, though. They won the ball high up the pitch and Kulusevki had a shot saved by Kepa. It broke to Son but he was offside by a yard.

Bournemouth 1-0 Tottenham

56 mins: Oooof. Kulusevski and Maddison play the corner short and the Sweden international puts in a belter of a cross towards the far post. It’s just ahead of Davies, who was arriving. Kulusevski is asking where he was.

Son is on for Spurs. He takes the armband.

Bournemouth 1-0 Tottenham

55 mins: Son has taken his bib off and is looking like he’s about to come on. You could take off any of Tottenham’s players based on tonight.

But it’s going to be Sarr, apparently.

Bournemouth 1-0 Tottenham

53 mins: SAVE! Chance again for Bournemouth on the break, as Kluivert races around the outside of Udogie. With the angle closing, he blasts his shot straight at Forster.

Could he have squared to Evanilson, who got forward to support? Perhaps. At the other end, Gray shoots straight at Kepa on his left foot.

Bournemouth 1-0 Tottenham

52 mins: Better, at last, from Spurs as Udogie gets around the outside of Johnson and forces Zabarnyi into the clearance.

Maddison’s corner is tricky for Kepa and the goalkeeper has to punch away under his own crossbar.

Bournemouth 1-0 Tottenham

50 mins: Remarkable stuff from Forster, who juggles the ball over Evanilson’s outstetched leg to evade the press. He got away with it.

Spurs win a corner as Bissouma’s shot is deflected wide but Kepa can claim from the second phase. Tottneham haven’t troubled the goalkeeper yet.

Bournemouth 1-0 Tottenham

48 mins: Yet to see a reaction from Tottenham as Bissouma passes the ball straight out of play while looking for Gray.

Bournemouth 1-0 Tottenham

45 mins: No changes for Spurs at half time, which is a choice.... Back underway. Fulham are beating Brighton 3-1, which means Tottenham would go 5th with a win tonight.

As it stands, Bournemouth are going above Spurs into 9th. Tottenham would go into the weekend in 10th.

HALF TIME! Bournemouth 1-0 Tottenham

“I don’t think Tottenham can play any worse in the second half,” says Les Ferdinand on Prime Video.

Spurs have Son, Werner, Porro and Bergvall as options on the bench.

You’d imagine we will see Son very soon if this continues.
