Arsenal lost their unbeaten record this season as Bournemouth claimed just their second Premier League victory against the Gunners after William Saliba was sent off.

The centre-back was shown a straight red card for denying an “obvious” goal-scoring opportunity when he brought down Evalison following Leandro Trossard’s back-pass.

It was Arsenal’s third red card this season and Mikel Arteta’s side have now dropped seven points in the games in which they have been reduced to 10 men, following draws against Brighton and Manchester City.

Ryan Christie smashed Bournemouth into the lead with a first-time finish from a clever corner routine, before Justin Kluivert doubled their lead from the penalty spot.

That was self-inflicted, as well, after Jakob Kiwior played a loose ball towards goal and Raya brought down Evalison. It also came moments after Gabriel Martinelli missed a golden opportunity to put the visitors in front.

Arsenal, who were also without both Buakyo Saka and Martin Odegaard in a league game due to injury for the first time since 2021, take on Liverpool at home next week, a game Saliba is now suspended for.

Declan Rice puts Arsenal’s run of red cards down to ‘silly mistakes’ and ‘naivety’

Declan Rice said “silly mistakes” and “naivety” is hurting Arsenal’s title challenge after the Gunners were reduced to 10 men for the third time this season in the defeat to Bournemouth.

William Saliba was sent off for the first time in his career after he dragged down Bournemouth forward Evanilson and was ruled to have denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity as the last man.

Rice was sent off himself in the 1-1 draw against Brighton and Leandro Trossard was dismissed in the 2-2 at Manchester City, both for game-delaying offences, but MIkel Arteta’s side were unable to avoid defeat against Bournemouth.

Arteta said Saliba’s red card, which came in the first half, made it “impossible” for Arsenal and Rice said the Gunners had “kicked ourselves in the foot” again in the Premier League.

Mikel Arteta said Arsenal getting a result with 10-men ‘impossible'

Mikel Arteta, speaking to Sky Sports on his team’s performance and William Saliba’s red card.

“We are obviously very disappointed with the result and gutted because we have to play another game in that context. With 10 men for 60, 65 minutes at this level, it’s just impossible.”

“It was a decision made on the pitch. That decision was changed. Now I don’t think the decision is going to change again. So, decision made.

“Willy has never done anything like this but he doesn’t do it on purpose. It happens. We have to accept it, move on, and have that pain we are feeling for Tuesday [against Shakhtar Donestsk].

“It’s a split-second decision you have to make. The striker is on his back. Obviously he doesn’t expect the ball to be coming in this way.”

“The decision has been made.”

Declan Rice says Arsenal were ‘naive’ going down to 10 men

Declan Rice, speaking to Sky Sports:

“We’ve kicked ourselves in the foot three times now this season. We’ve got away with it twice but luck can’t go your way all the time.

“The naivety of it, we’ve got to stop making mistakes and keeping 11 on the pitch. We can’t keep making silly mistakes. We’ve got to keep our best players on the pitch.”

FULL TIME! Bournemouth 2-0 Arsenal

Arsenal had the chance to be top tonight but they stay third. Liverpool host Chelsea tomorrow and could move four points above the Gunners with a win at Anfield, ahead of their trip to North London next weekend.

Manchester City are currently level on points with Arsenal. Pep Guardiola’s side go to Wolves tomorrow.

Chelsea could actually go above Arsenal tomorrow if they beat Arne Slot’s side at Anfield. Still early days, mind.

FULL TIME! Bournemouth 2-0 Arsenal

That’s it! Arsenal’s unbeaten start is over. Bournemouth claim a big win at home.

The Bournemouth players soak in the celebrations - this is just their second win over Arsenal in the Premier League, in 15 attempts. Andoni Iraola gets the three points he believes his side have deserved more of this season.

They deserve it. Arsenal, however, will feel this defeat was self-inflicted. Already without Saka and Odegaard, they had to be perfet.

But errors from Leandro Trossard and Jakob Kiwior led to the William Saliba red card and Justin Kluivert penalty. In between there was a cracking strike from Ryan Christie.

GOAL! Bournemouth 2-0 Arsenal (KLUIVERT 79’)

COOL!

Justin Kluivert sends Raya the wrong way and doubles Bournemouth’s lead! It looks like the three points are staying on the south coast!

What a bad trip for Arsenal - especially for Kiwior, who after putting Raya in trouble is brought off for Gabriel Jesus. The substitute is subbed.
