Guardiola: "The best performance of Bayern Munich will be on Wednesday"

Erling Haaland scored as Manchester City advanced to a Champions League semi-final rematch with Real Madrid after a 1-1 draw against Bayern Munich in the second leg of their quarter-final on Wednesday.

The Norwegian superstar missed a first-half penalty but atoned as City achieved smooth progress with a 4-1 win on aggregate by scoring the opening goal on a counter-attack in the 57th minute, just after Bayern missed a good chance at the other end.

Bayern’s lack of confidence after losing the first leg 3-0 in Manchester showed as they failed to take advantage of numerous chances. Joshua Kimmich scored the Bavarian powerhouses’ consolation from the penalty spot in the 83rd minute after City defender Manuel Akanji was penalised for handball but it was immaterial to the outcome.

Relive all the action as Bayern Munich miss out to Manchester City:

The Champions League desperately needs an injection of chaos

For all their contrasting histories in the Champions League, Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel have this week found themselves in similar positions. They have both had to try and make their squads believe they can overcome almost overwhelming situations.

Chelsea are 2-0 down to Real Madrid and Bayern Munich 3-0 down to Manchester City, but the two managers are trying to get their players to overlook these bare facts. Tuchel has been telling his players that, in general play, they were as good as City and it was only individual moments that cost them. The stirring talk is that, consequently, they can just as easily score three.

Lampard has meanwhile been drawing on 2012 again, and how his Chelsea team were also two goals down to Napoli before the most famous comeback in the club’s history.

Bayern Munich vs Manchester City

Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard believes a comeback will be possible tonight.

“We had a good first half in the first leg against City,” he said. “We’ll be very disappointed if we don’t win.

“We are highly motivated and in fine form. We’ve seen in the past that a comeback like this is possible.”

Bayern Munich vs Manchester City

Bayern haven’t failed to score at home in three whole years but the key for Man Ciy tonight will be limiting how many the hosts do score.

Only four teams have progressed from a Champions League knockout tie when losing the first leg by three goals or more, with the last to do so Liverpool against Barcelona in 2019.

Kevin De Bruyne insists Manchester City need their ‘A game’ for Bayern Munich

Kevin De Bruyne claims Manchester City will still need to take their “A game” to Germany to reach the Champions League semi-finals this week.

City appear to have one foot in the last four after an impressive 3-0 win over Bayern Munich in the first leg of their quarter-final tie.

Yet playmaker De Bruyne is taking nothing for granted ahead of Wednesday’s return encounter and is approaching the game as he would any other.

“It’s still got a long way to go,” the Belgian said. “It’s not like 50 minutes to go and you might cover up a bit. It’s 95 minutes and a lot can happen.

“You’ve heard of crazy scores in many games so we’ll have to bring our ‘A’ game.

Bayern Munich vs Man City

This is the sides’ eighth meeting, with Man City now having four victories to Bayern’s three and scoring 12 goals to their opponents’ 10.

The first six of those contests came in the Uefa Champions League group stage between September 2011 and November 2014.

Bayern Munich’s gamble

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting starts up front for Bayern Munich tonight despite not being 100% fully fit. It’s easy to see why Thomas Tuchel has elect to go with him as the main striker though.

Choupo-Moting has struck six goals in his last seven starts in this competition.

Will this be a gamble that pays off for Bayern Munich?

Haaland breaking Champions League records

Erling Haaland has scored 34 goals in just 26 Champions League appearances, rewriting the record books in the process.

Still just 22 and in only his fourth campaign in the competition, the Norway striker is already 19th in the list of all-time Champions League scorers and having gone above the likes of Samuel Eto’o, Antoine Griezmann, Kaká and Wayne Rooney.

He is now within sight of Edinson Cavani, Sergio Aguero and Alessandro Del Piero.

'We need a miracle’ – Thomas Tuchel knows Bayern have a mountain to climb

Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel concedes his side need a miracle to overcome Manchester City in the Champions League quarter-finals.

The German giants trail 3-0 on aggregate heading into the second leg of their last-eight tie at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday. Tuchel believes his side are capable of turning the tie around but knows it is a tall order.

The former Chelsea manager said: “We need a wonder, a miracle. I don’t know if talking about a 4-0 or 5-1 is appropriate – you need to be realistic – but we believe in ourselves.”

Man City are focused says Guardiola

With such a big lead in the tie (3-0 on aggregate) there is the possibility that Manchester City just rest on their laurels and try to coast through the game in Germany.

Pep Guardiola assures that this won’t be the case.

"We are focused on what we have to do to try to control the game.” he said, “We are against one of the most prestigious teams in this competition.

“It is 11 against 11 and we will try to do better than the opponent in this specific game. It would be a mistake to focus on the past."
