Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 in the first Clasico of the season in front of 86,422 fans at the Camp Nou on Sunday after a sensational strike from defender David Alaba and a late goal from Lucas Vazquez gave Carlo Ancelotti’s side three points.

Barcelona controlled possession in the first half but Real were lethal on the counter-attack, taking the lead when Alaba started a flowing move with a tackle and finished it at the other end with a left-footed drive from the edge of the box.

Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman brought on Philippe Coutinho at halftime while strikers Sergio Aguero and Luuk de Jong were also thrown on in the second half as they searched for an equaliser.

With seven minutes of injury time added on, Real doubled their lead when Marc-Andre ter Stegen saved a shot from Marco Asensio from another counter-attack but Vazquez pounced on the rebound to score.

Barca got a goal back in the 97th minute when Sergino Dest crossed to Aguero in the six-yard box and the Argentine tapped in but it proved to be a consolation goal as Real moved provisionally top of LaLiga with 20 points.

Barcelona are five points behind in eighth place. Follow all the reaction from El Clasico below, live.

Full time: Barcelona 1-2 Real Madrid

Real Madrid condemned Barcelona to their fourth consecutive El Clasico defeat as Carlo Ancelotti’s side secured a 2-1 win at the Camp Nou.

Sergino Dest missed a golden opportunity to give the hosts the lead when he blazed a shot over the bar early on before David Alaba scored his first Real Madrid goal when he started and then finished a blistering counter attack.

Barcelona struggled to create any clear chances as they searched for a response in the second half and the visitors wrapped up the victory in stoppage time when Lucas Vasquez converted from close range following another swift break.

There was still time for Sergio Aguero to net his first Barcelona goal with seconds remaining, but it was too little too late for Ronald Koeman’s side as they fell to another damaging defeat.

Carlo Ancelotti on Real Madrid’s victory in El Clasico: “I am happy because El Clasico is the most important match and we have won it here. Unfortunately there are only three points. We came out well, Barça also played a good game.

“It was a tactical and intelligent game. Defensively very well, we missed some passes in the first half. But we were effective against the team, this team has quality. The game was difficult, having won it leaves us happy.

“We can compete [for the title]. The team is very solid, we have to think that we have played against a great team that has played a good game. The fact that we are able to suffer together and not lose the ball is a virtue.”

This is Ancelotti’s first win at the Camp Nou, after he failed to win at Barcelona in his previous spell in charge.

“Sometimes you need to be defensive and it worked today,” Courtois says at pitchside.

It’s a game plan that worked for Real Madrid, though. They controlled Barcelona from the 15th minute and looked dangerous on the break. Barcelona barely threatened and Real Madrid defended well - Alaba was magnificent.
