Write them off at your peril - Haaland, Mbappe, Bellingham will star in UCL says Ancelotti

Paris Saint-Germain produced a stunning comeback on a thrilling night in the Champions League to dump Barcelona out at the quarter-final stage 6-4 on aggregate.

After the first leg Barcelona brought a one-goal lead into the match and opened the scoring in the night with a fortuitous touch from Raphinha beating Gianluigi Donnarumma at the near post.

PSG looked to get back in the game and were gifted the initiative after a mistimed challenge from Ronald Araujo saw the defender sent off inside the first half and hour.

That red card changed the momentum of the match and Ousmane Dembele took advantage to pull PSG level on the night before a long-ranged strike from Vitinha equalised the aggregate scores.

The visitors then won a penalty in the second half with Kylian Mbappe calmly slotting in home before putting the icing on the cake with Paris’ fourth in 89th minute.

PSG and Borussia Dortmund through to semi-finals on thrilling night in Champions League

Kylian Mbappe struck twice as Paris St Germain capitalised on the dismissal of Barcelona‘s Ronald Araujo to qualify for the Champions League semi-finals with a 4-1 win in the second leg.

Barcelona ran out at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys armed with a 3-2 triumph from their first meeting in Paris and when Raphinha capitalised on Lamine Yamal’s skilful approach work to fire the opener, they had sight of the last four.

That’s all for today

Only Cristiano Ronaldo (23 goals in 39 games) has netted more away from home in the knockout rounds of the Champions League than Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappé (15 in 12 games), with the Frenchman netting more in the competition against Barcelona than against any other side (6).

Another history-making night for PSG’s main man.

De Jong speaking to Spanish outlet Movistar: “To go 1-0 up was a big advantage to have created but, in Europe, when you are forced to play with 10 for as many minutes as we were, against a team as good as Paris, you know you’re going to suffer.

“We gave our all but, in the end, we didn’t get anything from that effort. This is a big blow because we were totally convinced we could go through. We fought for a result after the red card but it wasn’t to be. There’s no remedy other than pick ourselves up and try to do better next season.”

PSG boss Luis Enrique speaking to TNT Sports

“Very proud. Only the supporters thought we had a chance to go through tonight so we are very excited. We started the game in an unbelievable rhythm; taking control of the ball and the first time that they went into our box, they scored. It was very unfair but we didn’t change how we played.”

On their chances in the tournament: “Of course [we can go all the way]. That’s our spirit, our hope and every supporter knows we have the right commitment and character to fight to go through to the final.”

Dembele speaking after the game to French outlet Canal +: “Everyone believed [we could qualify], even if we lost the first leg 3-2. We didn’t give up and we knew we were going to score goals here. A big shift from the whole team.

“We worked the entire week, tactically, with the coach. His tactics were perfect. Even though we conceded the first goal, we didn’t let our heads drop. We continued to believe.

“The last time we were in the semis, we got to the final, and we’re crossing our fingers that we can do the same this year and get to Wembley. We’ll have to recover in time for Lyon at the weekend, then we’ll look ahead to the semi-final.”

Ferdinand, speaking on TNT Sports: “I just think some people seem like they are blessed from above that this is your time and it feels like that for Mbappe. For his second goal, that’s not falling to anyone else, but it falls to him because he is that guy.

“There is going to be a moment over the two legs [in the semi-final] where Mbappe has got to come to the fore. I think only Ronaldo [and Messi] have got more goals than him in Champions League knockout games. He is in the high-quality category of player.”

In tonight’s other tie

Next up for PSG is a semi-final tie against Borussia Dortmund after the German club completed a special comeback of their own, winning 4-2 at home against Atletico Madrid and 5-4 on aggregate.

Second-half goals from Niclas Fullkrug and Marcel Sabitzer completed the turnaround to send Dortmund into the Champions League semi-final bound for the first time in eleven years.

Rio Ferdinand, speaking on TNT Sports, reacts to the tie: “Crazy scenes. PSG have to thank Araujo for the red card. It was a rush of blood and he backed himself too heavily in that duel and came out second best. The red card changed the game on its head and spun it out of control.

“At that point, Barcelona looked the more confident, more complete team at that point. But as soon as the red card happened PSG looked like a team really in control and their confidence went through the roof and the big players stepped up.”
