Turkey beat Austria 2-1 in a thrilling last-16 encounter to advance to a Euro 2024 quarter-final against the Netherlands.

Merih Demiral opened the scoring after less than a minute and netted again in the second half. Michael Gregoritsch was left free at the back post for Austria’s response after another corner in the 66th but neither team could add any more despite a flurry of chances in the rain.

It is the first time Turkey have reached the last eight of the competition since 2008.

Euro 2024’s true dark horses step into the light as Turkey stun Austria to reach quarter-finals

Turkey were supposed to be Euro 2020’s dark horses. Maybe everyone whose predictions looked hideously bad when they crashed out with no points and a lone goal merely got the wrong tournament. Three years later they are quarter-finalists, with a plausible route to the final. If Austria were perhaps the best side of the group stages, Spain apart, they were swept out of Euro 2024 by Vincenzo Montella’s team, subjected to an assault on the eardrums from Turkey’s fervent support and caving in at corners.

If a player from the Saudi Pro-League was going to score twice in a Euro 2024 game, few had thought it would be Merih Demiral. The centre-back succeeded where Cristiano Ronaldo failed. In a sense, he did the Thuram double; like Lilian Thuram in 1998, an irregular scorer mustered a potentially career-defining brace. Demiral had two goals in 47 caps. He doubled that tally inside an hour of his 48th.

Austria midfielder Marcel Sabitzer hit by missile from crowd in Euro 2024 clash with Turkey

Austria midfielder Marcel Sabitzer was struck by an item seemingly thrown by Turkey fans during the second half of their Round of 16 defeat in Leipzig.

With Austria trailing in the hunt for a quarter-final place, Sabitzer repeatedly had several items hurled in his direction as he went over to take corner kicks in front of a section of Turkey supporters.

Having earlier had cups tossed at him, a smaller item appeared to hit Sabitzer, who fell to the floor in pain. Soon after, a number of Turkey players went over to the corner to attend to the stricken Austria captain, before talking to the crowd in an apparent attempt to get spectators to stop.

Former England defender Matt Upson speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live:

“I cannot think of a better game I’ve seen. Drama, commitment. Wow, what a game.

“Baumgartner thought that was in the back of the net. He does everything right. Off that greasy surface, he’s done so well. It was Gordon Banks, identical.

“The Turkish fans are going crazy.”

This was the moment Mert Gunok sent Turkey into the last eight at Euro 2024. A leaping, one-handed save in the 94th minute to deny Christoph Baumgartner.

Wonderful stuff.
