Atletico Madrid vs Man City LIVE: Champions League result, final score and reaction as City go through
Atletico Madrid 0-0 Manchester City (agg 0-1): A ferocious contest which saw Atletico defender Felipe sent off ultimately ended goalless as City booked their place in the final four
Manchester City survived a bruising encounter with Atletico Madrid to reach the Champions League semi-finals after a hard-fought goalless draw in the Spanish capital.
Pep Guardiola’s side battled an intimidating atmosphere and a fired-up home side at the Wanda Metropolitano to edge a tense quarter-final courtesy of last week’s equally-draining 1-0 first-leg win.
Atletico finished with 10 men as Felipe – who escaped a booking for a terrible challenge on Phil Foden in the first half – was sent off as home frustrations boiled over in the closing stages.
City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan went close to scoring when he hit the post in the first half but the visitors had to dig deep late on. Atletico upped the tempo in the closing stages and there were some moments of alarm, not least when Antoine Griezmann shot narrowly wide and Angel Correa tested Ederson in stoppage time.
Awaiting Man City are Real Madrid who knocked out Chelsea 5-4 on aggregate after a fantastic match at the Santiago Bernabeu last night.
All the action as it happened from Atletico vs Man City in the Champions League quarter-finals:
Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City
30 mins: SO CLOSE FOR CITY! I was just about to say Manchester City need to make the most of this possession and suddenly they click into gear.
Mahrez plays a sumptuous ball into Walker who pulls the ball back. It’s initially cleared away but falls to Gundogan whose effort hits the base of the post. He then tries a diving header on the follow-up but it’s blocked and away.
There was also a check for a potential penalty on De Bruyne but nothing came of it.
Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City
28 mins: Griezmann isn’t blessed with pace is he. The Frenchman gallops (or tries to gallop) down the right but Cancelo easily gets back to him and stops him from finding a teammate.
It’s been a quiet 15 minutes inside the Wanda Metropolitano.
Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City
26 mins: Laporte tries to find Foden on the left-hand side but he clips it straight out of play. Again though, it comes straight back to the Premier League champions.
After an end-to-end opening 10 minutes, City have now begun to dictate the tempo with consummate ease.
Foden tries his luck on the edge of the box and it spins to De Bruyne who hits it on the volley bu Reinildo blocks superbly.
Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City
24 mins: Felipe with a foul on Kevin de Bruyne and this time he does go into the book. Should have got one for the awful challenge on Foden.
Justice done.
Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City
22 mins: We cut to a shot of Luis Suarez on the bench. Just a reminder of the firepower Atletico do have to call upon if they need to.
A lull in the game over these past few minutes. City happy to keep the ball without really playing an incisive pass.
Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City
20 mins: Mahrez lets a pass roll under his foot as a lengthy build-up from City results in an Atletico throw.
Griezmann looks for Felix over the top but Ederson is straight out to head away! 25 yards from his own goal? Not a problem for the Brazilian keeper.
Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City
18 mins: City look to take the sting out of the early Atletico pressure. They knock the ball around slowly between their defensive players as whistles and boos ring around the stadium.
Atletico finally force a throw-in but City have it back straight away. The crowd dies down for the first time in the match.
Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City
16 mins: Phil Foden is going to carry on but he has definitely felt the effects of that strong, poor challenge.
We resume as Atletico look to pick a way through the City defence but a long pass to Griezmann is cut out by Cancelo.
Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City
15 mins: Phil Foden is now having a bandage applied to his head after that shocking challenge.
No yellow card for Felipe, by the way. Ridiculous.
Atletico Madrid 0-0 (0-1 agg) Manchester City
13 mins: Oh dear! Phil Foden has gone down after an horrific push in the back from Felipe as they were both jumping for the ball.
Felipe clearly meant that and Foden landed on his stomach and head. Horrific. Jack Grealish immediately told to warm up as Foden receives treatment.
