Atletico Madrid needed a penalty shootout to edge past Inter Milan and reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League after an exciting last-16 clash ended 2-2 on aggregate.
Jan Oblak saved two penalties and Lautaro Martinez blasted his effort over the bar to send Atletico through 3-2 in the shootout after the match finished 2-1 to the Spanish side after extra time.
Inter opened the scoring in the 33rd minute through Federico Dimarco but Atletico hit back two minutes later with a goal from Antoine Griezmann and Memphis Depay’s goal three minutes from time sent the tie to extra time.
Both teams had chances to win it in extra time but in the end it was Diego Simeone’s side who held their nerve and last season’s beaten finalists exited the competition.
Aletico join an impressive list of teams in the quarter-final draw, including defending champions Manchester City, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.
Arsenal and Barcelona also booked their place this, while the final spot was taken by Borussia Dortmund as Jadon Sancho scored in their 2-0 win over PSV Eindhoven.

It’s a wonderful passing exchange down the left, with Martinez dropping to release Barella. The midfielder then pulls it back to find Dimarco, one of the stars of last year’s run to the final.

22 mins: Chance! Oooh, Inter are getting lots of space to attack if they get their first ball out of defence right. Martinez holds off Savic as Di Marco is then released down the left by Mkhitaryan. Thuram was in the middle but Witsel got across and cut it out. A vital piece of defending.

18 mins: Inter are starting to grow into the game now, which is being played at an excellent pace. Martinez tries his luck from distance and almost gets a break as he shot hits Witsel and loops awkwardly for Oblak. The goalkeeper saves underneath his crossbar.
