Aston Villa are facing familiar opponents in their next match, travelling to play Manchester United in the League Cup on Thursday ahead of a Premier League meeting with Brighton and Hove Albion next Sunday. United will look for their revenge against the Villains on Thursday before visiting Fulham on Sunday.

Aston Villa end their 27-year winless run at home against Manchester United, with Emery’s side taking all-three points in his first match in charge at Villa Park. The new coach could not have asked for a better start, with Bailey and Digne both finding the back of the net in the first 11 minutes to give the hosts a lead and some cushion. An unlucky own goal from Ramsey on the stroke of half-time would reduce the deficit at the interval but the winger was determined to make amends, scoring a screamer four minutes after the restart to restore the two-goal advantage and add a strike to his earlier assist. Ten Hag’s side offered precious little going forward despite the deficit, with a slow and disjointed attack failing to ask Emiliano Martinez many questions. The win puts Aston Villa into 13th, while Manchester United temporarily stay fifth.
