'Our objective is the next round' - Emery on facing Juventus in UCL

Aston Villa had to settle for a 0-0 draw with Juventus in the Champions League after a last-gasp effort by Morgan Rogers was chalked off for a foul on Juventus keeper Michele Di Gregorio.

Villa thought they had won it at the death to end a six-game winless streak when Di Gregorio failed to catch a free kick but Diego Carlos fouled the Juventus keeper as Rogers was lashing the ball into the net, and boos poured out from Villa fans after the final whistle.

The match was far from a classic, with Juventus seemingly content to keep possession, and both sides squandered chances, with Villa’s best coming from Lucas Digne who hammered a free kick off the crossbar seconds before halftime.

Midway through the second half, Francisco Conceicao’s header from a corner looked destined for the back of Villa’s net but goalkeeper Emi Martinez dived to get his fingertips to the ball.

Unai Emery’s Villa, who had kicked off their Champions League campaign with three victories and three clean sheets, are ninth in the table after five games, while their Italian visitors, who had only 14 outfield players available on Wednesday, are 17th.

Aston Villa 0-0 Juventus

86 mins: A change for both sides to make a note of.

Juventus bring off Thuram for Fagioli, while Philogene takes up the right-wing position in place of Bailey.

Four minutes of normal time to go.

Aston Villa 0-0 Juventus

84 mins: Rogers gets in a nice position down the left, but instead of whipping a ball towards bodies in the middle, he tries to catch the keeper off guard and clip one into the far corner.

He’d have received all the plaudits if it came off but it’s a simple catch for Di Gregorio and alas, a wasted opportunity.

Aston Villa 0-0 Juventus

81 mins: Set-piece opportunities coming in an abundance for Juventus at the moment. A wide free-kick just evades the head of Kalulu, but goes out off a Villa man for a corner.

Two corners then follow, with Juve unable to capitalise on either.

The visitors have just made a change - Yildiz off for Mbangula.

Aston Villa 0-0 Juventus

78 mins: Substitutions for Villa.

Ross Barkley enters the fray in place of Boubacar Kamara.

Ollie Watkins also makes way for Jhon Duran - the hero of the famous win over Bayern Munich earlier this season.

Can he come up with the goods again tonight?

Aston Villa 0-0 Juventus

77 mins: Another half-chance for Villa. Rogers lets the ball run through, leaving Tielemans in space on the left side of the box.

Tielemans goes for the near post rather than the far, leaving Di Gregorio with a relatively comfortable save.

Aston Villa 0-0 Juventus

75 mins: Players stripping off on the Villa bench - a certain Colombian goalscorer is getting ready to enter the fray...

Aston Villa 0-0 Juventus

71 mins: CHANCE! This time it’s Villa who come close!

Leon Bailey does so well work the ball in the box, cutting it back to John McGinn on the penalty spot for what seems a simple finish.

Di Gregorio and Kalulu combine to stop the ball from going in and deny Villa a potential match-winner.

Both teams really going for this now.

Aston Villa 0-0 Juventus

69 mins: Good spell for Juventus, this. They’re spending a lot of time in the Villa final third - Conceição has just whipped in another ball towards the danger area, easily collected by Martinez though.

Also, we’ve just seen the GDS replay for that earlier Martinez save - centremetres in it.

Aston Villa 0-0 Juventus

65 mins: SAVE! Emi Martinez, take a bow.

Koopmeiner’s corner goes through everyone and comes to Conceição inside the six yard box, whose reactive header looks destined to bulge the net.

However, Martinez gets low and claws the ball off the line. Astonishing stop to keep Villa level.
