The Seagulls, who created 1.09 expected goals, opened the scoring in the first half as Adingra got on the end of a touch from Joao Pedro, and he curled the ball into the far corner beyond Martinez to give them the lead. Aston Villa hit back later in the half as they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Rogers, and Watkins dispatched from 12 yards to level the game. After the break, Emery's side, who produced 1.74 expected goals throughout, took the lead as Rogers latched on to a clever pass from Watkins, and he fired a powerful effort into the bottom corner. Late in the game, Brighton found a leveller as Lamptey arrived in the penalty area to fire home from the edge after some clever play from Joao Pedro.
