Arsenal staged a dramatic late comeback to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 on Thursday with Nicolas Pepe and Alexander Lacazette scoring the goals to boost their hopes of securing a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Wolves, who began the evening one place behind Arsenal, looked to move into fifth spot as they defended tenaciously to preserve the early lead given to them by Hwang Hee-Chan.

But the home side’s often desperate pressure was finally rewarded in the 82nd minute when Pepe turned well in the box and fired a shot past Wolves keeper Jose Sa.

In a frantic finale, Pedro Neto shot agonisingly wide for Wolves and Martin Odegaard went close for Arsenal before Lacazette scored from close range in the fifth minute of stoppage time to send the home crowd wild.

The win lifted Arsenal into fifth place with 45 points, one behind Manchester United but having played two fewer games.

Arsenal 0 - 1 Wolves

60 mins: Nelson Semedo is marshalled deeper and deeper into his own half before pulling up clutching his hamstring. Arsenal play on though and Martinelli sends the ball into the box for Lacazette. He rolls it onto his right foot and curls a shot wide of the top right hand corner.

Arsenal 0 - 1 Wolves

57 mins: Almost! Thomas Partey chips the ball over the top as Alexandre Lacazette and Bukayo Saka sprint in behind the high Wolves line. The ball drops closest to Saka but it’s just too far out of reach for him to bring under control and he only manages to prod it wide of goal.

Arsenal 0 - 1 Wolves

54 mins: Nelson Semedo is given the ball deep in his own half and is immediately pressed by Martin Odegaard who is too forceful trying to win back the ball and gives away a free kick.

Earlier Conor Coady won the ball off Ben White and look set to storm into the box only for White to hit the deck and convince the referee to give Arsenal a free kick.

It’s getting a bit scrappy out there.

Arsenal 0 - 1 Wolves

51 mins: Thomas Partey is fouled by Joao Moutinho in the middle of the pitch and Arsenal win a free kick. Granit Xhaka floats the ball over to Gabriel Martinelli on the left wing. He knocks a pass across to Bukayo Saka who shoots and sees his effort blocked in the middle of the box. There’s a scramble to get to the loose ball but it’s Wolves who manage to clear the danger.

Hee Chan Hwang’s goal is the only thing separating the teams at the break. It’s his first goal for Wolves in four months. Will it be a winning goal by the end of the game?

Half-time: Arsenal 0 - 1 Wolves

45+2 mins: Wolves take a one goal advantage into the break but Arsenal will feel that they’re right in the game. It was a mistake from Gabriel that led to Hee Chan Hwang’s opener and Wolves haven’t created much since.

Alexandre Lacazette has been a nuisance for the Wolves centre-backs but the Gunners haven’t really tested Jose Sa as of yet.
