David Raya pulls out the stops, so Arsenal keep going. They used every drop of energy that Mikel Arteta demanded to squeeze past Porto by single kick and make their first Champions League quarter-final since 2010. That came from the first Champions League shootout since the 2015-16 final, that Raya was so decisive in. He made one brilliant save from Galeno and a relatively lucky one from Wendell, the second more forceful enough and fittingly sending Arsenal through.

It was heroics from Arsenal’s goalkeeper, rather than the instinctiveness and electricity of their attacking play, that saved Mikel Arteta’s side here. Porto set out to frustrate and they succeeded. A grand, final act from Pepe dragged Porto into extra time and to a shoot-out. But Arsenal survived. On the balance of play, it was the team that probably has a chance of winning the Champions League that scraped through, but Arsenal will have to be a lot better, and more importantly smarter, than this if they are to be contenders.

Porto manager Sergio Conceicao accused Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta of insulting his family during their Champions League last-16 tie at the Emirates.

Arsenal advanced to the quarter-finals for the first time in 14 years after goalkeeper David Raya saved two penalties in a nervy shoot-out win over the Portuguese side, but Arteta’s celebrations were interrupted as the managers clashed in the middle of the pitch.

Emotions were running high during the contest, with both Arteta and Conceicao booked by the referee Clement Turpin while they were on the touchline. Conceicao was also involved in an incident with Arsenal forward Kai Havertz, who shoved the Portuguese coach when the ball drifted out of play.

The tension then spilled over after the penalty shoot-out and after Raya saved the decisive spot-kick from Porto forward Galeno. Arteta attempted to shake Conceicao’s hand but the Porto manager reacted and the two men had to be pulled apart. Arteta was left shaking his head as he walked away.

Barcelona reached the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in four years after a thrilling 3-1 home win over Napoli in their last-16 second leg gave them a deserved 4-2 aggregate victory.

“It went down to penalties and I’m there. We’ve been working a lot on penalties this year because on nights like this we need to be on top of our game, and that hard work with the goalie coach paid off.”

On his two crucial penalty saves, he says: “I should have saved three!”

It all erupts on the halfway line with a bit of a scrap between the two sets of players. Mikel Arteta runs over to drag some of his players away from trouble.
