Wenger back at Arsenal? "I want him closer" says Arteta

Arsenal returned to winning ways and deepened Newcastle United’s relegation worries as goals by Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli sealed a comfortable 2-0 Premier League win on Saturday.

Bottom club Newcastle had new manager Eddie Howe on the touchline for the first time after he was forced to isolate due to a positive COVID-19 test, but they were well beaten in the end and remain without a league win after 13 games.

Arsenal, whose 10-game unbeaten run in all competitions came to a juddering halt at Liverpool last week, dominated the opening half with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang missing a sitter.

But their patience was rewarded as Saka finished superbly in the 56th minute before substitute Martinelli volleyed the second 10 minutes later with his first touch of the game.

Newcastle’s Jonjo Shelvey was denied by the woodwork in the first half but once they went behind, a 17th defeat in 18 league games against Arsenal looked inevitable.

Arsenal stayed fifth in the table, level on points with fourth-placed West Ham United.

Newcastle have six points and are five behind 17th-placed Leeds United who play later on Saturday.

Brighton 0 - 0 Leeds

41 mins: There’s a huge appeal for handball against Liam Cooper after he blocks Moder’s cross the right. He ball does strike his arm as he went to ground but it’s never a penalty. Brighton win a corner though and Cucurella’s delivery is sent straight out of play for a Brighton throw in.

38 mins: Chance! How many chances does Maupay need to score? Lamptey makes an underlapping run from deep as Firpo is attracted wide to the ball. A simple pass takes the ball round the Leeds defender and Lamptey picks it up. He squares it into Maupay who just needs to guide it towards goal but his effort from the middle of the box goes wide.

36 mins: Brighton hit the post again! Moder is the first to react to a knockdown just inside Leeds’ final third and he chases down the loose ball before heading for the box. Llorente tries to win it back but Moder holds him off and brings the ball into the left side of the area. He shoots from a tight angle and his effort rattles into the near post and bounces out of play.

Brighton 0 - 0 Leeds

30 mins: Leeds seem to have found their footing in the game. They’ve had a little bit of joy down the left side and are challenging for the ball in the middle of the park.

Lamptey versus Firpo is still a one-sided contest but the rest of the pitch is fairly even.

Brighton 0 - 0 Leeds

27 mins: Lamptey breezes past Firpo once again and cuts the ball into the box but Leeds scramble it clear. Lamptey has Firpo’s number. He knows he can outpace the Leeds right-back. It’s not a fair contest out there.

Off the post! Trossard come close for Brighton

Brighton 0 - 0 Leeds

21 mins: Chance! Leandro Trossard turns well to bring the ball into the right side of the Leeds penalty area. He recovers it and shoots, hitting a sweet strike back across the box. Meslier sticks out an hand and manages to get a glancing touch on the ball. It’s just enough to force the shot onto the back post where the ball rebounds away.

Brighton 0 - 0 Leeds

18 mins: Tariq Lamptey versus Junior Firpo is a good battle that the Brighton man is winning by miles. He’s already drawn a foul from Firpo that’s seen him booked but goes past him again to get the ball to the edge of the box. Firpo seems to pull Lamptey back - that’s the prevailing opinion of the Brighton fans - just as he gets to the box. He loses possession and Leeds clear as the referee waves for play to continue.

Brighton 0 - 0 Leeds

15 mins: A cross from Leeds’ left side is whipped deep into the box. Raphinha legs after it and manages to keep the ball in play. He turns and runs it back towards the box before taking on Leandro Trossard. Trossard goes down and clips Raphinha as he tries to get back to his feet. The Leeds attacker then hits the deck and wants a penalty. The referee shakes his head and play goes on with the ball coming to Adam Forshaw on the front edge of the box. He shoots but his effort is blocked by Joel Veltman.
