Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Everton proved in vain as their hopes of a first Premier League title for 20 years were crushed on the final day of the season on Sunday.

Mikel Arteta’s side began the day needing a win and for Manchester City to fail to beat West Ham United -- a scenario that few inside The Emirates Stadium believed would happen.

All hope looked lost when Idrissa Gueye’s deflected free kick put Everton in front and City led 2-0 but Takehiro Tomiyasu levelled before halftime at around the same time that West Ham halved the deficit at City.

Kai Havertz fired home Arsenal’s winner late meaning they ended the season with six successive victories but they had to settle for the runners-up spot for the second successive season as City wrapped up a record fourth consecutive title by beating West Ham 3-1.

Arsenal ended with 89 points to City’s 91.

Martinelli cuts inside from the right and delivers a dangerous cross to the back post. Havertz is there to meet it unmarked and he heads towards goal, but it cannons off the post! The assistant referee had his flag up, so it wouldn't have counted.

Everton break away as Calvert-Lewin, who has drifted to the left touchline, cuts inside onto his stronger foot. He approaches the penalty area and sends a powerful effort towards goal, but Raya makes a diving save to deny him.

The Gunners are continuing to dominate the possession in the second half, keeping 61.4 per cent of the ball, but they have struggled to create anything meaningful. Arteta's side have produced just one shot since the break and have failed to test Pickford between the sticks.

After his earlier incident with Doucoure, Gabriel has gone down and he now requires treatment. There's some activity on the Arsenal bench, and it looks as though Arteta is considering making a change, with Zinchenko getting ready to enter the fray.

Everton look to counter-attack as Gueye drives with the ball through the middle, and he picks out Garner on the right. The Toffees have plenty of bodies forward, but the move breaks down as they opt to recycle possession rather than take any risks.

Branthwaite fails to deal with a header over the top of the defence by Partey, and Havertz has a chance to race through on goal. He approaches the penalty area and has an opportunity to shoot, but Branthwaite makes a superb last-ditch challenge, poking it back to Pickford.
