Australia will face India in the Cricket World Cup final after overcoming South Africa at Eden Gardens winning their semi-final clash by three wickets.
Proteas captain, Temba Bavuma won the toss and elected to bat only for South Africa to slip to 24-4 as Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc stuck early with the new ball. David Miller recovered the innings with a stylish century finishing with 101 runs as South Africa set a target of 213.
In reply, David Warner and Travis Head got the Aussies off to a flying start, putting on 60 for the first wicket. When Warner was dismissed for 29, Mitchell Marsh quickly followed and wickets continued to fall making Australia’s run chase a tense affair. Gerald Coetzee struck twice late in the innings leaving it to Starc and Pat Cummins to knock off the winning runs.
Australia advance to the tournament showpiece but face India who have yet to lose in this year’s competition and are favourites to claim the title of World Champions.
Relive the semi-final action below and get the latest odds and tips right here:
South Africa 71-4 (23) Klaasen 16, Miller 31, Maxwell 0-2 (2)
Maxwell bowls another tight over, just the one run from it.
South Africa 70-4 (22) Klaasen 16, Miller 30, Cummins 0-19 (3)
Klaasen has struggled with his footwork and goes for a big heave into the leg side but doesn’t get anything on it, and fortunately for South Africa it falls short of the incoming fielder.
Just two runs from the over.
South Africa 68-4 (21) Klaasen 15, Miller 29, Maxwell 0-1 (1)
After Zampa has gone for two sixes, Australia turn to Glenn Maxwell, and it’s a tight over, just the one run from it.
South Africa 67-4 (20) Klaasen 14, Miller 25, Cummins 0-17 (2)
Cummins will bowl only his second over here, his first one was expensive, and went for 12 runs, but this one has been a lot tighter.
Miller has chipped another one for four and he is starting to settle into a rhythm.
South Africa 62-4 (19) Klaasen 13, Miller 25, Zampa 0-18 (3)
Zampa is into his third over, there was a big six from Miller in his last one, and a single off the first at least keeps the scoreboard moving with Hazlewood bowling maidens at the other end.
And there’s another one! It’s a bit slower from Zampa and Miller has smashed that to almost the same place for six.
South Africa 55-4 (18) Klaasen 12, Miller 19, Hazlewood 2-12 (8)
Hazlewood is already into his eighth over, but Cummins is backing him to find the remaining wickets and make sure the result of the match is not in any doubt.
The South Africa batters cannot get Hazlewood away for any runs never mind boundaries.
South Africa 55-4 (17) Klaasen 12, Miller 19, Zampa 0-11 (2)
Two runs come from the first three runs of Zampa’s over, it is not a lot, but after the previous maiden, it will be welcomed by South Africa.
And Miller follows it up with the first six down the ground to bring up the Proteas 50! He has cleared the fence by some distance.
South Africa 46-4 (16) Klaasen 11, Miller 11, Hazlewood 2-12 (7)
Hazlewood will continue, and Klaasen has already played and missed twice against the seamer after the rain.
The rain may have helped the ground release more moisture, aiding the seamers as it sat under the covers.
Hazlewood has resumed with a maiden.
South Africa 46-4 (15) Klaasen 11, Miller 11, Zampa 0-2 (1)
Only Mohammed Shami has more wickets in the 2023 Cricket World Cup than Adam Zampa, and he has started well here.
Just two runs from his first over.
South Africa 44-4
The game is back underway and Adam Zampa will bowl the first over.
