Pakistan vs Australia LIVE: T20 World Cup 2021 semi-final result and reaction
Australia will take on New Zealand in Sunday’s final
Australia will take on New Zealand in the final of the T20 World Cup after beating Pakistan in the semi-final in Dubai.
Mohammad Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman smashed breezy half-centuries to help Pakistan post 176-4 at the Dubai International Stadium.
Put in to bat, Pakistan got off to a strong start with Rizwan (67) and skipper Babar Azam (39) forging a 71-run partnership for the opening wicket. Fakhar provided the late charge for the 2009 champions with an unbeaten 55 off 32 balls.
Set 177 for victory, David Warner made 49 before Australia rode unbeaten cameos from Marcus Stoinis (40*) and Matthew Wade (41*) to clinch the win with one over to spare.
They will now play rivals New Zealand in Sunday’s final after they beat England on Wednesday.
Pakistan 51-0 (7), M Rizwan 23, B Azam 26, A Zampa 0-4 (1)
Very tidy stuff from Adam Zampa, now such a confident bowler in this format. He uses the skid of the surface to push Rizwan and Azam back and concedes just four singles from his first over.
DROPPED! Pakistan 47-0 (6), M Rizwan 21, B Azam 24, P Cummins 0-17 (2)
An outstanding effort, but the catch goes down! This is another of those crisp crouching pulls towards fine leg as Pat Cummins again errs in line, but Adam Zampa nearly spares his bowler’s blushes with swift movement to his left and an impressive lunge for a quickly-dipping ball.
It hits him in the meat of the palm but doesn’t stick! Australia could have done with that to close the powerplay, but Pakistan haven’t properly got away from them.
Here is Zampa with the ball.
FOUR! Pakistan 46-0 (5.2)
Another unveiling of something from Babar’s resplendent collection of off-side masterpieces as he pushes Pat Cummins straight of extra cover and asks a double-hatted David Warner to get after it, Warner saving one with a long chase to about a metre away from the boundary.
Whippage! Over to Mohammad Rizwan now and he rolls his wrists fiercely through a Cummins full-toss on the pads. Glenn Maxwell magnificently dives in the deep and nearly keeps it to just two, but it springs from his grip as he skids across the surface and into the advertising cushion for four.
Pakistan 38-0 (5), M Rizwan 15, B Azam 21, J Hazlewood 0-14 (2)
A six to start but a better finish to the over from Hazlewood, drawing a thick-ish outside edge from a cutting Babar Azam as the ball keeps coming at the batter on the angle from wide of the crease. Short third man collects safely and prevents a single.
One over left in the powerplay - even enough so far. Pat Cummins to bowl it.
Pakistan 37-0 (4.4)
Rizwan is looking for a similar stroke but that’s good from Hazlewood, just pushing a slightly slower ball a bit fuller and beating what ends up a bit of a heave from Rizwan outside off.
SIX! Pakistan 35-0 (4.1)
Picked up and put away! He plays that shot so well! Mohammad Rizwan’s great strength is his ability to squat low and turn a length ball into a short one, and he does that perfectly here, getting underneath a Hazlewood ball angling into him and giving him a healthy larruping over the square leg boundary. First six of the evening.
Pakistan 29-0 (4), M Rizwan 7, B Azam 20, Pat Cummins 0-7 (1)
Pakistan’s opening pair try their best to run each other out with some rare indecisive calling after each of Cummins’ last two balls, but first Rizwan and then striker Babar are back in time, and the throws hustle by the stumps regardless.
Another change of bowling - Josh Hazlewood back into the attack.
FOUR! Pakistan 27-0 (3.2)
Another boundary for Babar! Fine leg is up for Pat Cummins and across his stumps the Pakistan captain is quick-stepping again, step-ball-changing into position and giving a length ball just enough of a nudge to beat the fielder in the circle. Four more!
FOUR! Pakistan 21-0 (3), M Rizwan 5, B Azam 15, Glenn Maxwell 0-10 (1)
That is a boundary of greater conviction! Babar Azam looks in tremendous touch here, a hint of a shuffle across his stumps to manipulate the line of Maxwell’s last delivery and lifting over the two fielders in the ring fine of square on the leg side. Clever batting, and that is the issue for Australia - that is a risk free stroke well executed, and Pakistan take ten off Maxwell’s first over.
DROPPED AND FOUR! Pakistan 16-0 (2.3)
Not much in the way of flight as Maxwell fizzes the ball down, seeking the timbers of Babar from over-the-wicket.
Dropped, and four! Maxwell switches around the wicket to Rizwan who is immediately charging down at him, looking to launch him back over his head. He gets underneath it and affords an extremely tough chance to David Warner, who makes outstanding ground to get to the ball as it tumbles some 30 metres back beyond him at mid-off, but the ball bursts out of his hands as he dives to clutch it and away for four to compound his woes. Tough, but catchable, certainly by a man of Warner’s high standards.
