If Manchester Originals are to contend they may need some domestic signings like Jamie Overton and Tom Lammonby to kick-on, with the squad on paper lacking in proven middle-order franchise players and a consistent pace bowling enforcer. The strengths are clear, though, and considerable: Phil Salt, Jos Buttler and Laurie Evans is an extremely good English top three, Andre Russell speaks for himself and the dual leg-spin attack of Wanindu Hasaranga and Matt Parkinson should be mighty fun indeed.

A deep batting lineup, but perhaps lacking in a dominant lower-order hitter - Bravo is best suited to a more limited role at this stage of his career. Equally, while there will be plenty of bowling options at the captain’s disposal, a second international class spinner could have been valuable - though there is a lot to like about Callum Parkinson, and van der Merwe has so much experience.

On the women’s side of the franchise, much of Danielle Hazell’s squad was already in place ahead of the 2022 season, but the former England spinner has called in her long-time teammate Jenny Gunn to bolster the pace ranks at Headingley, a ground that Gunn knows well.

Spinner Lucy Higham is signed from Trent Rockets.

Another West Indian all-rounder? Of course! As was anticipated, Northern Superchargers have looked to solidify their death bowling options for 2022 by taking Dwayne Bravo with their top draft choice. No cricketer has more T20 wickets than Bravo, whose wiles will be handy at Headingley.

New head coach James Foster has favoured experience elsewhere, too, with Wahab Riaz left-arm pace a useful complement for Bravo, and Luke Wright one of the most consistent players at the top of the order in the shorter formats for more than a decade. Roelof van der Merwe has no shortage of games at the highest level, either.

Continuing the theme of West Indian all-rounders, Deandra Dottin has signed for the Manchester Originals after being based at the London Spirit last year. She will be joined by experienced middle-order batter Amy Satterthwaite of New Zealand, who is set for a first appearance in The Hundred. Phoebe Graham, stalwart of the domestic scene in England, was rewarded with a professional contract at the North West Thunder during the winter and comes over to Manchester in The Hundred, too.

Andre Russell will be plying his trade at Old Trafford in The Hundred next summer, joining a power-packed batting order also bolstered by the addition of Laurie Evans.

Wanindu Hasaranga has also been drafted - the Sri Lankan is a real emerging all-round superstar, outstanding in the field, more than handy with the bat and now a top leg-spinner. Australian Sean Abbott completes a complement of overseas all-rounders and should take the new ball, while compatriot Daniel Worrall qualifies as a domestic player.
