England are hoping to secure a place in the Women’s T20 World Cup semi-finals when they face the West Indies in Dubai this afternoon.

Heather Knight’s team are unbeaten so far with three wins from three including a 10-wicket hammering of Scotland in their last outing on Sunday. They sit top of the table with a healthy net run rate but know that defeat today will leave them vulnerable to an early exit from the tournament.

For their part, the West Indies reignited their campaign with an eight-wicket win over Bangladesh. They chased down a total of 104 with 43 balls remaining meaning they boosted their own net run rate to +1.708. The result of that means a win over England would be enough to send them through to the next round.

This match is effectively a quarter-final tie and England will be determined to continue their winning run and join Australia and New Zealand in the final four.

England 84-3 (13), Jones 2, Sciver-Brunt 29, Dottin 0-13 (2)

Amy Jones is the new batter, she’s only batted once in the tournament so far and gets off the mark with a single. Nat Sciver-Brunt will need to bat the rest of the innings to get England to a big total now.

Four singles come from the first five deliveries with Sciver-Brunt deciding to keep the strike for the next over and taking one more from the last.

England 80-3 (12.1), Knight 21, Sciver-Brunt 27, Dottin 0-8 (1.1)

Oh no.

Heather Knight is called through for a single but starts limping on the way. She tells the umpire that she can’t continue and has to retire hurt.

That’s a blow for England. A big one.

England 79-3 (12), Knight 21, Sciver-Brunt 26, Matthews 1-15 (2)

Hayley Matthews comes back into the attack and pins Sciver-Brunt on the pads as she goes for a sweep. The West Indies appeal but the umpire calls ‘not out’. This is a close call but the West Indies have no reviews left to use.

Sciver-Brunt survives and pulls a short ball into the legside for one more. A big sweep shot from the England captain keeps the West Indies interested for half a heartbeat but the ball falls short of the deep square leg fielder.

A reverse sweep from Knight from the final ball brings four runs making it seven from the over.

Annoyingly for the West Indies a hawkeye replay shows that the ball was going on to hit the stumps for the appeal against Sciver-Brunt.

England 72-3 (11), Knight 16, Sciver-Brunt 24, Munisar 0-11 (1)

Not out!

Not only is it not out but Knight got an inside edge on the ball and collects a couple of runs.

Mike Jones15 October 2024 15:56

England 70-3 (10.5), Knight 14, Sciver-Brunt 24, Munisar 0-9 (0.5)

After the drinks break. Sciver-Brunt and Knight continue to accummulate the runs with singles off the bowling of Ashmini Munisar.

The spinner targets the stumps but Sciver-Brunt gets low for the sweep and nails it to the boundary! Better from England who are starting to frustrate the West Indies.

Sciver-Brunt moves into the 20s as Knight takes a couple of leg byes off the final delivery of the over.

The West Indies appeal for LBW which gets turned down. Hayley Matthews sends it upstairs...

England 61-3 (10), Knight 13, Sciver-Brunt 16, Dottin 0-7 (1)

Great work from Knight! Sciver-Brunt takes one to get the captain on strike and Knight drives through the offside, picking out the gap with ease and collecting another boundary.

This is a handy partnership developing now. England are 61 at the halfway stage.

Mike Jones15 October 2024 15:47

England 54-3 (9), Knight 8, Sciver-Brunt 14, Dottin 0-0 (0)

Now then. Here come Deandra Dottin.

She’s already influenced this match with a catch and a run out, can she take some wickets as well?

Mike Jones15 October 2024 15:44

England 54-3 (9), Knight 8, Sciver-Brunt 14, Fletcher 1-12 (2)

Glorious! Knight skips down the pitch and meets the pitch of the ball from Fletcher. She drills a drive through cover, beats the fielder and picks up four.

England’s 50 comes up and Knight wisely uses the next ball to get off strike.

Sciver-Brunt misses out on an attempted sweep before lofting a full toss down the ground for a single. Between them Knight and Sciver-Brunt take two from the last two balls.

Mike Jones15 October 2024 15:43

England 46-3 (8), Knight 2, Sciver-Brunt 12, Alleyne 0-10 (2)

Alleyne continues and angles one into the pads of Sciver-Brunt who flicks her away to the boundary fielders on the legside for two runs.

After sweeping shot into the gap at midwicket brings Sciver-Brunt one more before Knight cuts into point for a single of her own.

That is good! Sciver-Brunt premediates a ramp shot and flicks the ball over the wicketkeeper. There’s no fielders there and the ball rolls quickly away for four runs!

England are moving again on the scoreboard.

Mike Jones15 October 2024 15:39

England 38-3 (7), Knight 1, Sciver-Brunt 5, Fletcher 1-4 (1)

Nat Sciver-Brunt escapes an LBW shout we the West Indies wasting a review trying to get the umpire’s not out decision overturned. There was maybe a bit of adrenaline involved in the decision to review that as the ball pitched outside the line of leg stump.

Sciver-Brunt then takes three from the final couple of deliveries.
