'It's pretty big!' RSA beat England at Home of Cricket

Ben Stokes produced the crucial double strike to set England on course for a three-day thrashing of South Africa at Old Trafford.

England romped home in the second Test by an innings and 85 runs - an even bigger margin than the one they lost by in similarly crushing fashion last week at Lord’s - as they flattened the tourists for 179. And it was captain Stokes who once again proved his inspirational all-round qualities, following up his fine century on day two with a long spell of bloody-minded brilliance with ball in hand.

Fourth-wicket pair Keegan Petersen and Rassie van der Dussen had successfully sucked the heat out of England after a strong start from the hosts, blocking their way in a determined stand of 87 in 261 balls.

With inspiration in short supply it fell to Stokes to break their will as he removed the pair in successive overs at the start of the evening session. His decisive moment came in the middle of a draining 14-over stint either side of the tea break, as flogged himself for the cause and came up trumps. With his work done he tossed the new ball to James Anderson and Ollie Robinson, who finished things off in a blaze of glory by taking the last five wickets for just seven runs in the space of just 30 deliveries.

South Africa 95-3 (39); R van der Dussen 18, K Petersen 23

Van der Dussen whips the ball off his pads and a sliding Jonny Bairstow uses some athleticism to prevent it going for four - they run three. Big cheers from the crowd.

Good response from Leach as he keeps Petersen back in his crease for the remainder of the over, though they take a single from the final ball.

South Africa 91-3 (38); R van der Dussen 15, K Petersen 22

Jimmy Anderson on to bowl from the Statham End. I wonder how Rassie van der Dussen’s fingers are feeling and whether Anderson will target them?

He’s bowling quite full, jagging it in and out but Van der Dussen plays them well. He digs out a yorker for a single into the leg side before Petersen wears one in the box region. Good aggressive bowling from Anderson.

South Africa 90-3 (37); R van der Dussen 14, K Petersen 22

Jack Leach with the first over post-lunch, from the James Anderson end. Keegan Petersen on strike, short leg and slip still in place.

A nice cut shot for two but that’s it from the over. Will South Africa try to press the accelerator after lunch?

England in control at lunch

LUNCH! South Africa 88-3 (36); R van der Dussen 14, K Petersen 20

Root with the final over before lunch. Inauspicious start as the first ball goes down leg, beats Foakes and runs away for FOUR byes.

Van Der Dussen happy to see out the remaining deliveries and get to lunch, which he does.

It’s England’s session though - three wickets for 65 runs and they’re in control of this Test match.

South Africa 84-3 (35); R van der Dussen 14, K Petersen 20

Petersen gets a leading edge as he tries to whip a straighter delivery to leg but it loops harmlessly into a gap in the off side. Promising for Leach.

Foakes then interested as a ball turns down the leg side and appeals for caught behind but even Leach doesn’t look bothered and the umpire certainly doesn’t.
