Ben Stokes on second Test and Potts' progress

Jonny Bairstow blasted a match-winning 136 from 92 balls to lead England to a remarkable five-wicket, second Test victory over New Zealand on Tuesday.

New Zealand were bowled out for 284 before lunch, setting England a target of 299 to win - the highest ever to claim a Test victory at Trent Bridge. England were 139 for four at tea, having lost star man Joe Root for three, with the game in the balance.

But then Bairstow and skipper Ben Stokes ripped the New Zealand attack apart in devastating fashion, hammering 102 in the first nine overs after the interval. In total, their partnership was worth 179 runs in 20.1 overs.

Bairstow flew to his century in 77 balls - the second fastest test century by an England player, one ball slower than Gilbert Jessop's record against Australia at The Oval in 1902. Stokes, battling a knee injury, was unbeaten on 75 as he hit the winning runs.

Mitchell takes a single from a full, wide Stokes ball, and Henry will face the final four. Out comes the short stuff again – it’s not just the bounce which makes it difficult to play but the wild swerve that comes with Trent Bridge in the summer. A slightly fuller ball brings an inside edge against the pads, and the final ball of the over is chipped in the air over Anderson at gully and lands safely.

WinViz has England’s win percentage down to 14%, the algorithm clearly not impressed with what it’s seen so far this morning.

Mitchell takes runs off Leach in this over who isn’t creating chances, bar that early look for Root. The pitch is offering a little spin but it’s not causing either batsman great concern.

Stokes returns with more of the short stuff for Henry, who has handled this barrage very capably. A few runs too as New Zealand’s lead ticks over 250.

Mitchel nudges Leach for a single, and Henry sees off the rest of the over. This doesn’t have the feel of an imminent wicket – England have created only the tough chance for Joe Root in the first over, but he put it down.

Stokes continues with a series of bouncers aimed at Henry’s chin. The Kiwi ducks the majority of them, one of which leaves the batsman on his backside trying to avoid the ball, as he gets through the maiden over unscathed.

Leach again. Stuart Broad chases down a Henry sweep down to fine leg and dives energetically to prevent the boundary. That brings Mitchell on strike and Stokes brings up the field to successfully cut off the single on the final ball, so Stokes will bowl at Henry once more.

Stokes takes the ball himself at the other end, and offers up a couple of testing short balls which bounce and sway up near Henry’s chest. He avoids the first two before expertly guiding the third down through point, a lovely stroke. He tries to slash the final ball of the over through the off-side too but swings and misses. It’s a no-ball, though, so Stokes goes again: this time Henry lets it go.

It’s Jack Leach to take the first over. He was expensive yesterday but Stokes must fancy him to help get these three remaining wickets, even if it comes at a cost, and he almost grabs one with the second ball of the day. Leach ups his pace and draws an edge from Henry’s bat, which Root can’t quite get to at first slip.

Stuart Broad on England’s new leadership

“Baz [head coach Brendan McCullum] and Stokesy [captain Ben Stokes] have been very much all about enjoyment, fun and expressing yourself. It’s not reinventing the wheel, it’s just freshening up the mindset and bringing home how enjoyable it is to play cricket. It’s about making sure enjoying yourself is the number one thing for the day, and I actually think without that mindset yesterday we wouldn’t have got seven wickets.”
