From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. England are looking to seal the series and put on another impressive performance against New Zealand, before all eyes turn to India and the pinnacle of the sport - the Cricket World Cup.

Having been finalists in the previous edition four years ago, England will take on New Zealand again in Ahmedabad on October 5, but before that there is one more ODI left to play in this four-match series, at the Home of Cricket.

Ben Stokes was the star at the Oval on Wednesday, hitting a record-breaking 182 as England stormed to a dominant victory, but there were some other problems Jos Buttler’s side will want to address this time out. England slid to 13-2, and after an incredible partnership of 199 from Stokes and Dawid Malan, the wickets fell once the record-breaking Test captain was out, and the hosts were bowled out with 11 balls remaining.

There were also question marks over Jason Roy’s fitness. He did not play at the Oval due to a back spasm and once again misses out at Lord’s, which will be the final opportunity for the fringe players to push for a place in the World Cup squad, which has to be finalised by September 28. New Zealand will want to bounce back from their heavy defeat on Wednesday, but there was a boost as Kyle Jamieson is building up his recovery from injury.

New Zealand 169-8 (35) Ravindra 25, Lister 4 Ali 4-40 (9) need 139 runs to win

Ali on a hat-trick here...all the fielders have come in, this could be the last bit of life in this game.

Joe Root conducts the crowd from slip..but its batted defensively into the off side.

With all the field still in, Lister gets off the mark with a big drive over the bowlers head to the boundary.

Wicket! Henry out for 0! New Zealand 169-8

As Matt Henry comes out to bat, the word from New Zealand is that Lister is padded up and ready to bat if required, although Southee will not bat.

And he lasted one ball, goes for a big drive and is caught at slip.

Wicket! Jamieson out for 15! New Zealand 169-7

Ravindra goes on the attack at the start of Moeen Ali’s over with a big drive down the ground, but the required rate is not being brought down substantially.

But the next ball Ali strikes and Jamieson is out caught and bowled, England closing in on victory!

New Zealand 164-6 (34) Ravindra 20 Jamieson 15 Livingstone 1-27 (6) need 148 to win

Livingstone will continue from the other end, but there is no sense of urgency from the pair out in the middle, despite the game starting to slip away from the Kiwis.

Jamieson has played all round one but it just misses the stumps.

New Zealand 159-6 (33) Ravindra 18 Jamieson 12, Moeen Ali 2-31 (8) need 153 to win

Moeen Ali continues, and the pressure is still being put on the New Zealand batters, who seem under no pressure to hurry the game along and to push for victory.

The duo are just knocking it around for singles, while the rate is up at nine an over.

Jamieson has found the boundary with a lofted drive over his head.

New Zealand 151-6 (32) Ravindra 16, Jamieson 6, Livingstone 1-22 (5) need 161 to win

New Zealand just taking time in the middle, despite the run rate now creping up to 8.8 an over, and when they did go for the big heave into the leg side, it was picked up by the fielder on the boundary.

Another lofted drive from Jamieson bounced just in front of long off.

New Zealand 146-6 (31) Ravindra 14, Jamieson 3, Ali 2-23 (7) need 166 runs to win

Ali is into his seventh over here as England edge closer towards victory.

It is worth a reminder that there could be just three more wickets required as Southee has a dislocated and broken thumb and Lister was dealing with a hamstring problem - both sustained early in the first innings.

Wicket! Phillips out for 25! New Zealand 142-6

Livingstone has a wicket and the dangerous Phillips is out for 25 after picking out Brook on the boundary.

Sonia Twigg15 September 2023 19:05

New Zealand 132-5 (27) Phillips 22, Ravindra 7, Ali 2-18 (5) need 180 to win

Moeen Ali has bowled exceptionally well here, as New Zealand just trying to hang in this game.

He is giving the batters nothing to try and go at.

New Zealand 126-5 (26) Phillips 21, Ravindra 3, Livingstone 0-8 (2)

Livingstone is back on as the sun starts to set at Lord’s with the floodlights taking over from natural light as we head into the warm September evening.
