After five defeats from their first six games the defending champions had long since given up hope of reaching the semi-finals, but officially bowing out at the hands of their Ashes foes with a 33-run defeat simply poured salt into open wounds.
Once again it was their batting that let them down, failing to get to grips with a manageable target after a spirited showing from the bowling unit left Australia 286 all out in the final over.
England were knocked over for 253 in response, Ben Stokes top-scoring with 64 but unable to pull his side out of the fire.

Moeen Ali: “I think the clarity in the players and the messaging has been the same but I think as players and individuals that hasn’t been the same.
“The clarity in the positions and in the roles hasn’t been there. Lack of runs, lack of wickets and not fielding as well as we can.”

Moeen Ali to Sky Sports: “To defend it in the style that we have - that’s the most disappointing thing, the style of cricket that we’ve played.
“I think the message we’ve tried as a group of players and as a management we’ve tried to play our way. We just haven’t had the confidence and I think the lack of belief in the side.”

Pat Cummins: “I feel like every game has improved a little bit, I don’t feel like we’ve played a complete game or really closed out the game.
“We knew at the start of the tournament we weren’t at our best, but you see a marked improvement and everyone is diving around, it’s one of the things we’ve improved on.
On Zampa: “He’s been bowling beautifully in the last couple of games, but he’s a match-winner, we’re lucky to have a few of them.
“He was at his best tonight.”

Buttler: “I think it’s the right shot to play, the execution was off, I want to take the game on and that was a time
“My own form has been a concern, coming into the tournament I felt like I was in a great space. my own performance with the bat has really hurt us.
“The only way to get into form is to front up and go again. The longer it goes on the closer you are to getting out the other side of it.”

Jos Buttler: “Disappointment I feel like we’re having the same chat after every game at the minute.
“To lose by 30-odd there’s plenty of ways we could find those 30 runs we needed.
“It certainly a low point, I’ve had a few but definitely as a captain to be stood in this position when you arrived in India with very high hopes is disappointing and it hurts a lot.
“We certainly haven’t done ourselves justice, coming into the tournament we fancied ourselves to have a good go at it and push whoever it was all the way.
“We feel like we’ve let ourselves down, we’ve let people at home down and that wears heavy on your shoulders.”

Adam Zampa was named player of the match, and said: “I thought we put up a really competitive total in the end but it was always going to be tough to defend that.
“The ball has come out probably the best it ever has tonight, so that was good, it was fun.”
On his batting he added: “Just to stay fairly positive and trying to bat until the 50, I think I came in at 240-odd and wanted to just try and stay there until the end of the game.”
Wicket! Rashid out for 20! ct Inglis b Hazlewood - Australia win by 33 runs
Rashid goes for a shot and can only top-edge it straight into the air for Inglis to catch.
England are officially knocked out of the World Cup.
Wicket! Woakes out for 32! ct Labuschagne b Stoinis - Englnad 253-9
Stoinis will bowl this one, there’s 18 balls left and England need 44 runs.
His first two balls are yorkers. But Rashid has top-edged one for six...and that was high, but they haven’t checked the height!
That’s just what England wanted. Woakes goes for a big heave but misses the slower ball.
He goes for a big shot final ball of the over, but doesn’t get enough on it and it’s caught by Labuschagne.
England 243-8 (47) Woakes 29, Rashid 13, Cummins 2-49 (10)
Cummins will bowl himself out here, and that leaves Hazlewood with just one over remaining, he might have to bowl Stoinis again if they cannot take the wickets in time.
Woakes has smashed a big six to take the required runs down below 50, if they can get near it would be a massive achievement from the lower order.
That was a big 75 metre six!
