A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.

Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.

Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.

Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.

In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

Back to the artistic gymnastics, where England’s Courtney Tulloch has just landed an insane routine on the rings. His mark of 14.700 is the best of the day and again, makes him a contender for the individual medals to come later this week.

It means England stay on top of the standings after the second rotations.

This will be the last race of the day - and what a brilliant end it would be for Ryan Owens, Hamish Turnbull and Joe Truman to win the gold for England in the men’s team sprint.

Owens powers England away, but Australia are off the mark stronger!

They increase their advantage over the second lap - and Australia bring it home. What a commanding victory that was.

England will settle for silver.

After a false start, New Zealand up the pace over the final lap to take bronze over Canada. They cruised home in the end.

Now, it will be England vs Australia for gold.

James Hall gets England going on the pommel horse. It was a difficult routine but the execution was superb - a 13.800.

Jake Jarman follows with a 13.100 and then Joe Fraser, wow! It’s a brilliant routine from Fraser, the best of the day so far at 14.650!

That will put him among the contenders for the individual medals.

Scotland’s Pavel Karnejenko has just delivered an excellent, and much needed, score of 14.200 on the rings to bolster his team’s hopes. That’s the second highest of the day and should keep Scotland ahead of Wales in the standings.

It was actually Cyprus who were second in the standings, after England, following the first rotation - and they are continuing their strong performances on the vault.

The Georgiou brothers are setting some impressive scores, with Marios dropping an excellent 14.150. Cyprus could be one to watch here.

The final two races in the velodrome will take place after a couple of medal ceremonies, but back at the gymnastics the team competition is indeed shaping up nicely with England, Wales and Scotland all in contention following the first rotation.

England lead the way, but Scotland have beaten Wales’ score on the pommel horse. England are heading to the pommel horse now.
