A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.

Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.

Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.

Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.

In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

GOLD for Bryony Botha in the women’s 3000m individual pursuit at the velodrome as she sets a new Commonwealth Games record in a time of 3:18.456.

She nearly caught her opponent Maeve Plouffe in the final and recorded a comfortable win by 8.66 seconds. Australia’s Plouffe settles for silver.

Chalk up a BRONZE medal for Team Scotland and it’s come in the women’s 3000m individual pursuit. Neah Evans was taking on Sarah Roy of Australia and Evans was in control of the race from the off.

She eventually crossed the line in 3:25.050, over three seconds ahead of Roy. Evans was unlucky to miss out on a place in the gold medal race when she broke the Commonwealth Games record in qualifying, only to see it surpassed by two other riders but she leaves with a medal round her neck.

That gold medal race is taking place now as Bryony Botha of New Zealand squares off with Maeve Plouffe of Australia in an all-Antipodean battle.

The first heats of the women’s sprint semi-finals have just taken place and Canada’s Kelsey Mitchell got the better of Emma Finucane of Wales, while Ellesse Andrews of New Zealand just edged England’s Sophie Capewell.

Those semi-finals are best of three, so Capewell and Finucane still in the hunt but it’s an uphill battle for them to make the gold medal race.

The first round of the men’s keirin is complete. From a home nations perspective, Hamish Turbull (ENG) and Jack Carlin (SCO) reach the second round directly, while Joe Truman (ENG), Hayden Norris (ENG) and Alistair Fielding (SCO) are into the repechage.

Australia’s two-time Commonwealth keirin champion Matt Glaetzer also safely made it through directly from his heat, with the top two in each race qualifying for the second round.

Adam Peaty cruises into 100m breaststroke semi-finals on injury return

Adam Peaty shook off a few nerves on his return from injury to top the timesheet in the men’s 100 metres breaststroke heats and cruise into Saturday night’s semi-finals.

Peaty missed last month’s World Championship after fracturing a bone in his foot in a freak training accident in May, but he showed no persisting issues in his first outing at the Commonwealth Games.

He clocked 59.92 seconds – the only swimmer to breach the one-minute barrier – to win his heat and is well poised to claim a hat-trick of titles in his favoured event after prevailing in 2014 and 2018.

‘It’s blown the cobwebs out,’ said Peaty after qualifying fastest for the semi-finals
