Ashley McKenzie describes how he won judo gold medal at the Commonwealth Games

A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.

Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.

Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.

Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.

In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Peaty’s reaction

Adam Peaty spoke to the BBC following his 50m breaststroke qualifying heat. He touched on losing the 100m finals last night and how he plans to take a break after the Commonwealth Games.

“This morning I didn’t even do a warm-up, I wasn’t that bothered. I had two hours sleep.” he said, “Obviously it was a devastating night for me. So it is good to come in here this morning, getting it out there and hopefully improve through the rounds.

“It takes time to reflect and heal and push on. I’ve been doing 50s all my life but then I thought that about the 100m so I am not going to get complacent. After the 50m tomorrow I am going to take a long break and completely reset, have a strong winter.

“I haven’t had a strong winter for two years and it is showing obviously dancing a little bit as well you really have to got back to the drawing board and go back to basics. It has got very complicated in the last two years but I know what I have to do now.”

Joe Fraser and James Hall will target Commonwealth Games glory in Monday’s pommel final as Adam Peaty aims to bounce back from a shock fourth place in the 100 metres breaststroke.

Fraser and Hall enter the first day of apparatus finals at Arena Birmingham contending with injuries.

Fraser was part of the team gold despite a fractured foot while Hall was beaten out by teammate Jake Jarman in the all-around final, settling for silver, although it could have been worse given he battled through immense pain from an ankle injury.

The England pair will take on favourite Rhys McClenaghan of Northern Ireland in the men’s pommel final.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Table Tennis

Charlotte Carey has lost the first game in her singles match with Australian Jian Fang Lay 11-7.

Oh no. A better fight back from Carey sees her draw the next game level at 10-10 but Lay takes it with consecutive points to win 12-10.

Carey and Wales are into the last chance saloon. She needs to win the next three games.
