Ashley McKenzie describes how he won judo gold medal at the Commonwealth Games

A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.

Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.

Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.

Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.

In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Women’s Hockey

Scotland beat South Africa in their opening match!

Charlotte Watson took the lead for Scotland, before South Africa hit back with two Lisa-Marie Deetlefs goals.

Sarah Robertson levelled the game after great play out wide from Millie Stieger before the Scots added a third through with a Fiona Burnet deflection in the third quarter.

Jennifer Eadie netted a fourth in the closing stages to seal the victory.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - T20 Cricket

T20 cricket is a new inclusion at this year’s games with all the matches being played at Edgbaston, just outside the city centre. Today’s opening game sees the world no. 1 ranked side, Australia, take on India.

The Indian’s batted first with captain Harmanpreet Kaur scoring 52 runs off 34 balls to set 154-8 from their 20 overs. Australia’s Megan Schutt took two wickets with the final two balls of India’s innings and will be on a hat-trick when she bowls next match.

155 runs needed to win for the Aussies.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Gymnastics

Northern Ireland’s Rhys McClenaghan won the country’s only gold medal at the Gold Coast four years ago and has a lot of pressure to deliver again this year.

He’s discipline is the pommel horse and the arena crowd goes silent in anticipation of his start...

Incredible display! A massive score of 14.350 for the Commonwealth champion is a lead of 2.5 marks and puts him through to Monday’s final.

I don’t really need to explain the cheers from the crowd after that one.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Netball

England are in full flow against Trinidad and Tobago much to the delight of the watching crowds. They ended the first quarter 15-6 in front but have already extended that to 23-6 in the second.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Swimming

Lots of action going on in the pool at Sandwell. Scotland’s Gregor Swinney lowers his own Scottish Record in a time of 23.91 in the 50m Butterfly - in his first ever international race - to make it into tonight’s semi-finals.

They’re shaping up nicely as Australia’s Kyle Chalmers was 100th of a second quicker than England’s Ben Proud, while South Africa’s Chad le Clos made it through but has some work to do to make it into the medal race.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Netball

Things have settled down for England now, they’ve got into the match and the nerves have died down. There’s too much quality for Trinidad and Tobago to handle and despite a few misses from goal attack Helen Housby the host have opened up a 13-4 lead.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Women’s Hockey

Scotland have had a difficult start to their match against South Africa and conceded two goals early on.

They’ve fought back brilliantly and now find themselves leading 2-3.

Fiona Burnet went clear of her marker and deflected a drilled Sarah Robertson pass into the corner of the net. Scotland lead in the third quarter and have the momentum.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Reaction from Alex Yee

It was an incredible 5km run from England’s Alex Yee to overhaul New Zealand’s Hayden Wilde in the men’s triathlon to claim the first gold medal of the Commonwealth Games.

“I am just happy. Just bizarre that it’s me doing this. There were so many nations and athletes that I have not raced before.” Yee said after the race.

“I feel extremely grateful and proud to be a triathlete today. It’s an amazing day for triathlon and I feel super proud to be the winner of this event.

“This is home Games and the first time I have been able to race in front of my parents for a long time. This is probably I’d say my greatest achievement ever. I have spent so many sessions doing the same hill so many times and when I got there it felt like I had done this race before.

“I backed my run to an extent. I am proud of my team. To hold the gap to 15 seconds on the bike was pretty good and I felt confident I could do it. Hayden [Wilde] is a great competitor.”

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Netball

Depsite coming into the match with a strong starting seven, England haven’t made the quickest of starts. They are currently leading 4-3 in the first quarter.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Netball

One of England’s greatest stories from the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast was the last second victory in the women’s gold medal netball final.

Helen Housby’s goal snatched an unexpected gold medal from the hosts and NEC Arena crowd is bringing the volume for every as England get their title defence underway against Trinidad and Tobago.
