Irish boxer Michael Conlan brands sport organisation AIBA 'cheats'

Leigh Wood retained the WBA featherweight title on Saturday night in the most remarkable of boxing contests, sending Michael Conlan through the ropes in the final round after climbing off the canvas himself in the first frame.

There was plenty of support for home fighter Wood at the Nottingham Arena, and the champion started impressively, but the fight looked set to be short lived when the challenger floored Wood on the bell at the end of Round 1. Conlan looked low but threw a left hand over the top to send Wood crashing to the canvas, and the resilience required by the Englishman to make it back to his feet was only built upon as the bout progressed.

Olympic bronze medalist Conlan boxed smartly throughout, picking his shots wisely with his back against the ropes, as Wood found occasional success to the body of his undefeated opponent but increasingly looked to be forcing punches and chasing Conlan, who was stunting any momentum that Wood could create. Still, the hometown fighter continued to press forward valiantly.

Wood, 33, put together his best spell late in Round 10, somehow rallying to the body of Conlan after eating a series of bruising left hooks. The champion then scored a debatable knockdown of his 30-year-old opponent – who believed he had simply slipped – in the 11th frame. The enthralling contest came to a head early in the 12th and final round, when Wood sent Conlan tumbling through the ropes with a vicious knockout. Conlan was subsequently taken to hospital in an ambulance and was later confirmed to be “conscious and stable”.

Erica Anabella Farias def. Sandy Ryan via split decision (93-97, 97-94, 95-94).

Wild scoring, which is becoming increasingly unsurprising. But the correct result overall, as Indy Sport sees it.

Victory for the former two-weight world champion, and a first pro defeat for Ryan.

Ryan vs Farias – Round 10

The Nottingham crowd roars on Ryan.

Farias is docked a point midway through this final round for leading with her head again!

It’s a real brawl here. Left hook lands for Ryan. Overhand right connects for Farias, who then unloads to the body of the Briton.

Ryan vs Farias – Round 8

Farias is keeping her taller opponent at bay by throwing hooks and overhands as Ryan tries to enter.

Again the women clinch.

Ryan gets a nice lead uppercut in, but she’s on the receiving end of some harsh counter shots for her trouble.

“We’ve got to go now. We’ve got to go,” she’s told by her head coach at the end of the round.

Ryan vs Farias – Round 7

Left straight, right straight from Farias. She follows it with an uppercut and hook.

The Argentine swings hooks into the body of Ryan then squeezes an uppercut through the guard but it only grazes the Briton.

A hard left overhand connects for Ryan in retaliation.

The women clinch, Ryan’s nose bleeding now. A couple of decent jabs from Ryan after the women separate, but it’s Farias who lands the heavier shots with her hooks to the body and head – though some are blocked.

Ryan vs Farias – Round 6

Lead uppercut and left hook combination from Farias!

This is getting quite scrappy, with Ryan getting suckered into a brawl and missing with a lot of shots.

Ryan vs Farias – Round 5

Big overhand right and left straight the key shots for Farias in a strong fifth round for the Argentine!

“We start now,” Ryan’s coach tells her, when she says she’s not hurting her opponent to the body enough.

Ryan vs Farias – Round 4

A short right straight lands to the reddened face of Ryan.

She returns fire with her own right straight.

Ryan vs Farias – Round 3

Immediately Farias looks for a left hook. Now she starts winging that shot off both sides, before catching Ryan with a short right straight.

The Argentine backs up Ryan against the ropes and pours on hooks to the head and body!

Ryan clinches Farias and the pair are separated, presumably to Ryan’s relief.

She gets back behind the jab, but the round turns into a brawl late on! A left hook lands for Farias, but a left hook and right straight connect for Ryan!

She appears to wobble Farias slightly there...
