KSI and Logan Paul will finally fight tonight as their eagerly-anticipated rematch takes place in Los Angeles – and both men are poised to make a pretty penny.
The two YouTubers are technically fighting for the ‘YouTube Championship Belt’ – a fetching red and gold strap initially handed to KSI by London heavyweight Dereck Chisora.
But there’s also a lot of money at stake, too.
Both men will earn a guaranteed $900k, per the Californian State Athletic Commission.
That’s only slightly less than Devin Haney, the WBC lightweight champion of the world, who fights Alfredo Santiago Alvarez on the undercard.
But it’s more than the British WBO super-middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders will earn for his fight with the undefeated Marcelo Esteban Coceres. Saunders – an unbeaten world champion who has defeated the likes of Chris Eubank Jr, Andy Lee and David Lemieux – will make just $750k.
The first fight between KSI and Paul generated a cool $11m – although that doesn’t mean the two men divided the profits 50/50.
This fight is expected to make even more money, with both KSI and Logan Paul able to boost their profits through various sponsorship deals.
Devin Haney retains his WBC lightweight title with a unanimous 120-107 victory. All three judges score it the same.
Chris Stokel-Walker:
Never underestimate the wiliness of small children: as soon as the last match was over, they congregated at the barriers by the entrance to be in prime position for the main eventers coming out.
Up next is the float, Nikita Ababiy against Jonathan Batista.
It's only a four rounder, so those of you hoping to see the main event soon, you don't have to wait too long.
Chris Stokel-Walker:
We have a doctor in the ring as Batista is down with a neck injury caused by a back of the head shot. He's struggled to get up off the gruond, and has earned the crowd's displeasure. "This is embarassing," says one man in the audience. "Nikita, just kill him."
Jonathan Batista has been disqualified after he threw a number of illegal punches after the bell.
What a weird fight.
Chris Stokel-Walker:
Before this float match, I managed to grab a few words with Keemstar, the YouTuber behind one of the platform’s biggest news channels, Drama Alert, which tracks every falling out and scandal by YouTubers.
“JJ [KSI’s nickname] is going to win in the fourth round,” he says. “He’s going to have to use his Mayweather defence to get through the early rounds, and then we’re going to see those light gloves come into action and he’s going to knock Logan Paul to the f**** ground in the fourth or the fifth round.”
He was as bullish about what this event meant as he was about KSI’s chances. “YouTubers are taking over the world. We moved in and we took over boxing, we can take over anything if we put our minds to it. What’s important about this is this is a moment in time that will change the landscape of YouTube forever.
“Whoever loses this event, their career is over, and whoever wins will take this event to the next level.”
Chris Stokel-Walker:
The man running the PA has just managed to get the biggest reaction of the night by saying just eight words: "Coming up next: KSI versus Logan Paul 2!"
Chris Stokel-Walker:
We've just been asked to make some noise if we're from out of town and an awful lot of people just shouted out very loudly. I also don't mean to alarm anyone, but the t-shirt guns have been broken out in the ring.
