Katie Taylor called for a trilogy fight against Chantelle Cameron at Croke Park after becoming a two-weight undisputed champion with a thrilling majority-decision victory in Dublin.

The Irish icon took Cameron’s super-lightweight belts and achieved redemption, after having her homecoming spoilt six months ago with the first loss of her professional career in a decision defeat in the Irish capital.

But a gripping rematch saw the 37-year-old show speed and tenacity to upset England’s Cameron by majority decision, with one card even at 95 points apiece and two other judges scoring it 98-92 and 96-94 to Taylor.

The win for Taylor opened up the potential for a trilogy between the pair, and the Irishwoman was vocal in her desire to have the bout at Croke Park - Ireland’s largest sporting stadium which is able to house over 80,000 fans.

“To have a trilogy would be iconic for the sport,” Taylor said after her fight. “Even better if we could have it at Croke Park, with 80,000 people. That’s the stadium we all wanted for the homecoming so that would be absolutely amazing if that happened.”

The record books will show that Taylor beat Chantelle Cameron in their rematch, and that all four world title belts at super-lightweight were the prize. The record books will only tell a tiny piece of the story; this fight was about redemption, pride, desire, it was personal and forced both of the women to fight to a bloody standstill. It was unforgettable and there was controversy.

Taylor simply refused to lose and from the opening bell until the final seconds, when she looked close to exhausted collapse, she was still throwing desperate punches. Cameron matched her in a fight where there was never a wasted second.

The punch stats have now been revealed after Katie Taylor’s nail-biting majority decision victory over Chantelle Cameron on Saturday night.

In a thrilling rematch from their first fight in May, the Irishwoman avenged her only professional defeat in a nip-and-tuck encounter in front of her own fans in Dublin. One judge scored the fight a draw, while the other two were 98-92, 96-94 for Taylor who became a two-weight world champion in the process.

The 37-year-old also became just the third fighter to win undisputed championships in two different weights in the four-belt era, with the result potentially setting up the prospect of a mouthwatering trilogy between the pair at Croke Park.

Taylor’s speed was her greatest tool as she continued to carve ahead at the midway point, using straight punches to blitz the defending champion. But then came Cameron’s best spell of the fight, as she began to invest in the body, spear Taylor with jabs, and weigh on the home fighter.

Come the eighth round, Taylor looked to be standing only by virtue of leaning on Cameron. Perhaps she was hurt, for certain she was tired, yet still Taylor found reserves to unfurl hooks when needed.

And in the ninth, Taylor was ferociously spirited, waiting for Cameron to close in then punishing the champion by unleashing combinations, as crimson crawled down Cameron’s forehead. It was the ultimate display of Taylor’s fighting soul, and it would seal her ultimate redemption.

Cameron, a game competitor from start to finish, soon departed, but only after graciously applauding Taylor upon the revelation that the gold would be staying in Dublin.

And Taylor will be staying in this sport for now, having defied every doubter on a night that the city desperately needed, amid a week of tragedy and shame. The trilogy, at the iconic Croke Park no less, awaits.

But tonight Dublin needed this. Dublin needed Katie Taylor.
