James DeGale v Chris Eubank Jr: Tale of the Tape

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Chris Eubank Jr has left James DeGale facing retirement after securing the finest victory of his career via a unanimous decision in their IBO super middleweight title match in London.

He had previously lost his two biggest fights, against Billy Joe Saunders and George Groves, but improved sufficiently to win an occasion DeGale said would force the loser to retire.

At 29 and with so high a profile there was little risk of that for Eubank Jr, but after his third defeat and a career in which he became the first British Olympic gold medallist to win a world title DeGale - the loser by scores of 114-112, 115-112 and 117-109 - has been left with few lucrative options to pursue.

Round 3: Selby's struggling a bit and he just can't keep Douglas off of him. He's connecting with nice punches and he's clearly the more skilled but it's hard to see how he can sustain this pace.

Round 4: Better from Selby who manages to find his range. Douglas looks to be tiring a bit and Selby's skill is starting to show.

Round 5: Douglas' corner are trying to gee him up. They can see this fight is starting to slip into a pattern away from their man. Selby is connects well with the left hook as the American leans in and that's another round to the Welshman.

Round 6: Selby lands a big left hook but Douglas find some success in that round too. The American is targeting Selby's body to try and slow him down, and the Welshman is being forced to block the punches with his forearms.

Round 7: Selby gets caught with a nice double left-hook from Douglas and a second cut has opened up, this time above his right eye. He's still beating Douglas to the counter, but is starting to get mauled on the ropes. Does Douglas have the nous to break him down though?

Round 8: Selby gets caught on the ropes midway through the round and Douglas unloads to the body, but again the American just doesn't show the touch of pause to pick his punches, instead winging in wild hooks that are easily blocked.

Selby is starting to pick him off as he comes in and pick up the rounds now as the fight gets more ragged.

Round 9: More nice boxing from Selby, picking off at range. Douglas is determined and fearless, mauling again on the ropes and catching Selby on occasion when he gets on the inside, but when it comes to clean and clever work he can't match the Welshman.

Round 10: More of the same from Selby, has he put himself out of reach now?

Tom Kershaw23 February 2019 21:18

Round 11: A dominant round for Selby, who is again finding the cleaner shots as Douglas runs out of ideas. There's a mixed feeling from ringside though.

Round 12: And there we have it, what should be another round to Selby, but the opinions at ringside are very mixed. Some favour Douglas' aggressive front foot output, others Selby's clean work. It's subjective and both camps feel they've won.

Whatever the result, Selby performed admirably after sustaining such a nasty cut so early in the fight.
