Dillian Whyte recovered from a knockdown to beat Oscar Rivas at the O2 and become the mandatory challenger to Deontay Wilder’s WBC world title.

The Brit started brilliantly and almost knocked Rivas down in a thrilling second round. But the Colombian gamely battled back and sent Whyte to the canvas in the ninth.

Thank the good Lord: they're not playing the national anthems.

Seconds out. Round one.

Vithushan Ehantharajah20 July 2019 23:02

Round one

A good start. Rivas is walking forward and he's already started flicking out his jab. He lands a couple of smart shots and seems intent on making an aggressive start, but Whyte isn't going to stand there and let himself be hit. He evades one jab and lands a big right hand.

But Rivas keeps marching onward and lands a big overhand shot of his own! Neither man is holding anything back. A cracking start. I think Rivas edged that, but it was close.

Round two

Rivas makes another aggressive start. He keeps spitting out his jab and he's not going to let Whyte, who has been top of the WBC rankings for over 600 days, find his range. The Colombian has got very fast hands and lands two fine right hands which catch Whyte sleeping.

But here he comes! He catches Rivas with a right of his own and the Colombian is staggered! He's all over the place and Whyte begins to unload, desperate to blast him out of there. Rivas dips his head and he's in trouble but Whyte can't find the killer punch! He has to be careful not to tire himself out here...

Rivas holds on. And lands a good jab of his own! He somehow survives until the end of the round and it already seems as though his head has cleared.

WHAT. A. ROUND!

Round three

A quieter round after the carnage. Rivas has settled down well and is boxing smartly, attacking Whyte's body with his jab. But Whyte can take his time here because he now knows he has the power to finish this, if he finds the right shot.

Rivas is the aggressor once again and is marching forward. Whyte is probably just catching his breath after throwing so many big, wild shots in the second round. Rivas overshoots a big right hand over the top of Whyte's jab and is still struggling to find his distance, but he's probably done enough to take this round.

Round four

Whyte is taking his time here. Working the double jab and allowing Rivas to come forward. Rivas is moving around well and boxing nicely, but he's not doing too much to trouble his opponent. Whyte's jab is keeping him at a respectful distance, but he does land a fine counter hook when Whyte overcompensates, planting his feet and throwing a wild haymaker. Another close round.

Round five

Whyte is beginning to unload. He throws a wild left hook which Rivas neatly sidesteps. That would have surely finished the fight...

Whyte tries the shot again - again Rivas dodges it. He then goes to the body in an attempt to slow the Colombian's movement. Rivas is beginning to come forward again, though, and he's enjoying some success with the double jab.

But here comes Whyte! He throws a good body shot, just when Rivas was beginning to look a little more adventurous. This is a fine performance from Whyte.

Round six

Whyte doubling up nicely on the jab. He's well in control here. Rivas is really struggling to find his range here. He throws a huge overhand right, more out of frustration, which Whyte evades. But Rivas turns up the heat and attempts to unload with Whyte on the ropes. Much better from the Colombian.

Whyte attempts to fight fire with fire and throws some big shots of his own. He lands with a neat corkscrew right uppercut and finishes the round on the defensive, avoiding some flailing shots.

The round ends and Rivas' trainer explodes! "ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS?" he roars, as his man receives treatment for a swollen left eye.

Round seven

Nice left hook from Rivas! That was a lovely shot to start the round and it landed, although Whyte immediately smiles and shakes his head. This is turning into a real scrap.

The rant from his trainer may have woken Rivas up! He comes forward and keeps at Whyte with his double jab, attempting to drag the number one contender into deep water. But Whyte is keeping his cool, and taking his time...

Whyte lands a couple of big body shots. Rivas throws a nervous look to his corner. He's looking very one-dimensional in there. He attempts to go to work on the ropes but Whyte spins out of trouble and keeps him at range. Good boxing.

Whyte lands another big body shot. Rivas isn't liking those.

Vithushan Ehantharajah20 July 2019 23:29

Round eight

Whyte is beginning to unload. He's really focusing on Rivas' body, despite the Colombian's left eye being completely swollen at this point.

Rivas is still coming forward but he's fresh out of ideas. He's not mixing it up at all. Unlike Whyte, who is utterly in control. He lands a chopping right hook and a brutal uppercut which rocks Rivas. There's an opportunity for a knockout here...

Rivas wobbles, but Whyte misses the chance to pull the trigger and the Colombian presses forwards again! He's an incredibly hard man, even if he is well behind on all of the cards.

This is only Rivas' third 12-round fight. Will he tire in the championship rounds?
