From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Hundreds of people rushed to evacuate the California headquarters of YouTube after a shooter opened fire, leaving at least three people injured and one woman — the suspected shooter — dead, police said.

Officers could be seen in video patting down people as they left from the San Bruno base of the video-streaming giant, which sits in Silicon Valley at the heart of America's premier tech hub.

The San Francisco General Hospital has taken in an unknown number of patients from the shooting incident, according to local news station KCBS.

Spokesman Brent Andrew said a 36-year-old man was in critical condition, a 32-year-old woman was in serious condition, and a 27-year-old woman was in fair condition.

"Was just briefed on the shooting at YouTube's HQ in San Bruno, California," Donald Trump tweeted after the shooting.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with everybody involved. Thank you to our phenomenal Law Enforcement Officers and First Responders that are currently on the scene."

Employees in the headquarters tweeted about the shooting soon after it started, describing a chaotic scene in which the tech workers attempted to blockade themselves inside of rooms for safety.

Of the four people taken to hospital from YouTube headquarters, three suffered gunshot wounds and one was believed to have been an ankle injury, police said at a news conference on the scene.

With no remaining threat to the community, authorities were preparing to work through the night trying to understand what may have motivated the shooting.

San Bruno Police Chief Ed Barberini could not comment on whether the suspect was a YouTube employee. He said the suspect was using a handgun but could not confirm the make or model.

“We know very, very little right now”, he said.

YouTube spokesman Chris Dale said the company’s “incredibly tight-knit community” was reeling, adding that “today it feels like the entire community of YouTube were victims of a crime".
