Putin jokes about being late for Trump call

Vladimir Putin has rejected a full ceasefire but has agreed to halt attacks on energy targets in Ukraine after his call with Donald Trump.

The Russian and US presidents agreed during their phone call on Tuesday to seek a 30-day ceasefire against energy and infrastructure targets in Moscow’s war in Ukraine, according to the White House.

The White House described it as the first step in a "movement to peace" it hopes will eventually include a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea and a full and lasting end to the fighting, adding that negotiations would "begin immediately" on those steps.

However, the Kremlin said Mr Putin told Mr Trump that the US and its allies must end military and intelligence assistance to Ukraine to halt hostilities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said later on Tuesday that Ukraine would support the US proposal to stop strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, and said he hoped to speak to US President Donald Trump about his talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The phone call, which began at 2pm GMT and lasted for more than an hour, came as the White House pushes for Russia to sign off on its 30-day ceasefire proposal to end Russia’s three-year invasion of Ukraine.

What to expect as Trump and Putin thrash out a ceasefire in Ukraine

Peace – or at least a ceasefire – seems very likely soon, writes Mark Almond – but the deal’s success hinges on delicate negotiations, territorial concessions and security guarantees. And neither the US nor the Russian leader is particularly known for delicacy...

The timings of the Putin-Trump call

While we wait for the details of the Donald Trump call with Vladimir Putin, let’s look at the timeline from today.

A US official told NBC News that the call lasted an hour and a half.

White House deputy chief of staff Dan Scavino, who announced the call had started, said it begun at 2pm GMT.

Despite claims the call lasted 90 minutes, Scavino claimed at 3.32pm that the call was still happening.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, who has also confirmed to Russian state media site Tass that the call has concluded, said at the start of today that the call would take place between 1pm and 3pm GMT.

But Putin was addressing a business conference in Moscow until 1.52pm.

Eight minutes later, he began his phone call with Trump.

A few minutes after 1pm, when the call was due to start, Putin was asked by his former economy minister Alexander Shokhin if he was going to be late. In front of a crowd of oligarchs, Putin shrugged his shoulders and said it wasn’t worth listening to Peskov. The crowd then burst into laughter.
