Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Major news networks reportedly declined to air Donald Trump‘s first public speech in months to the Republican Party of North Carolina’s annual convention on Saturday evening.

The former president appeared at the event in Greenville, North Carolina, but CNN and Fox News did not carry the speech on their networks.

Mr Trump continued to advance his “stolen election” myth, immersing himself in his denial of the results and his departure from the White House while fuelling the narrative behind a pro-Trump mob that stormed the US Capitol to overturn the votes of millions of Americans.

He also praised a partisan vote audit underway in Arizona and encouraged GOP lawmakers in Pennsylvania and Georgia to do the same.

He claimed he is trying to “save” democracy while also calling the 2020 presidential election “the crime of the century” and a “hoax” and “by far the most corrupt election in the history of our country” despite no evidence from his own campaign or administration officials, the Justice Department, FBI and elections officials from both parties across the US.

“We all know what happened with the election,” he said. “And we can never, ever let that happen again, and we’re going to go forward and we’re going to continue to look and things are being found that is not even believable.”

The former president also called on China to pay $10 trillion in reparations to the United States and the world for the coronavirus pandemic and said nations should cancel their debt to Beijing.

Mr Trump also said a criminal investigation launched by the New York attorney general’s office into his financial affairs is “the ultimate fishing expedition” and an attempt by Democrats to bring him down after he was twice impeached while in office.

“It’s been a five-year witch hunt, hoax after hoax,” said Mr Trump. “They’ll never stop until November of 2024.”

GOP senator: Republicans could be doing plenty of things other than re-litigating 2020 election

Republican US Sen Roy Blunt said he “can’t really analyse” whether Trump believes his own election lies.

“And of course, he had the ability to go to court and prove whether that election was fair or not,” he told NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday.

And of course, those cases were largely dismissed or withdrawn.

“So we move forward and we continue to move forward,” Mr Blunt said.

“There are plenty of things for Republicans to be talking about besides the election process itself,” he said. “He could be incredibly helpful in 2022 if he gets focused on 2022 and the differences in the two political parties.”

White House briefing room to return to full capacity

The White House press briefing room will return to 100 per cent capacity on Monday after more than a year of physical distancing guidelines from the coronavirus pandemic.

Press secretary Jen Psaki told CNN that “frankly, returning the briefing is something that sends a message to the world that we’re not afraid to engage.”

“We’re not afraid,” she said. “We believe in the free press.”

She did not commit to adding more formal news conferences to Joe Biden’s agenda – he has held only one since taking office but has answered shouted questions after remarks or among groups of reporters during events.

“He takes questions several times a week” and “is always, almost always, open to have that engagement with reporters, and I expect that will continue to be the case,” she said.

Trump’s ‘words will surely kill again,’ warns co-founder of Lincoln Project

Lincoln Project co-founder Steve Schmidt has warned that Trump’s words“will surely kill again” and he condemned the “profoundly stupid media coverage around the demise of the Trump blog”.

He derided the idea that his election loss, “social media bans and inability to sustain a blog are evidence of his decline, irrelevance and diminishment” and people who believe that “so long as no one speaks his name out loud, no problem.”

“These people are fools and their delusions are dangerous for the survival of American democracy,” he said. “We are at an hour that requires people to wake up. Trump is powerful and he is a clear and PRESENT danger to our democratic society and national stability.”
