From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

“Kim Jong-un is a murderous dictator and Vice-President Biden served this country honourably”, 2020 challenger Pete Buttigieg responded after President Trump responded to Mr Kim’s suggestion that Mr Biden was “a low IQ individual” by saying: “He probably is, based on his record. I think I agree with him on that.”
Touching down in Washington, the president is also expected to continue facing calls for his impeachment by Democrats in the House of Representatives. While there is a growing push for impeachment proceedings, top Democratic leadership have remained skeptical about the mesaure — and any successful impeachment would almost surely be struck down in the Senate.

Planned Parenthood has officially filed suit in Missouri, where one of several abortion bans seen throughout the country have popped up recently.
New documents obtained by the Sierra Club indicate that political appointees in Donald Trump's EPA convinced the former chief of the agency, Scott Pruitt, to reverse course on a judgement that a Wisconsin county's air quality needed to be addressed.
The decision by Mr Pruitt to not declare Racine County in violation of EPA smog standards then allowed FoxConn to build a facility there. Mr Pruitt even ignored scientific advice when approached, according to the new report.
According to Michael Wolff's new book — Siege: Trump under Fire — special counsel Robert Mueller's office actually drafted indictment papers to be used to charge Donald Trump with obstruction of justice.
The claims in the new book, reported by The Guardian, have already been refuted by the special counsel's office, but provide an interesting glimpse into what may have happened behind the scenes.
This isn't quite a US politics story here, but Americans do love their Bald Eagles — and here's a stunning photo of one.
A new Gallup poll shows that most Americans don't think that Donald Trump has that certain je ne sais quoi to be president, but that he is getting there.
According to the new poll, just 40 per cent of Americans think Mr Trump has presidential qualities. Which is actually an improvement for Mr Trump, who previously only convinced 33 per cent of Americans that he has those qualities.
Even with that improvement, 58 per cent said they didn't think Mr Trump has that special presidential quality to him.
Here's what Seth Moulton, a congressman and 2020 Democratic contestant, has to say about Donald Trump's leadership:
"Part of his job is to be commander in chief, and I have never seen a weaker commander in chief in American history," Mr Moulton said on MSNBC.
He continued:
“The way that he cozies up to our enemies and abandons our allies across the globe, insults our own troops, American heroes like John McCain, it’s very hard to imagine anyone going into combat that actually trusts this commander in chief."
“One of the first things you learn when you join the military is that you can drop out of a run and they’ll let you try again, you can fail a test and they’ll let you take that test again, but if you lie about anything, you’re gone that afternoon. That’s how important trust is in the military.”
Justin Amash, the sole Republican who has called for Donald Trump's impeachment in Congress, has claimed that attorney general William Barr purposefully misled the public about Mr Mueller's report into Russian meddling in the 2016 election to help the president.
In a series of tweets, Mr Amash accused Mr Barr of helping to further a "false narrative" put forth by the White House.
"Attorney General Barr has deliberately misrepresented key aspects of Mueller’s report and decisions in the investigation, which has helped further the president’s false narrative about the investigation," he said.
