Donald Trump arrived in Palm Beach, Florida, on Air Force One shortly to resume civilian life at Mar-a-Lago after departing the White House for the final time on Wednesday morning.

"It was a privelege to be your president," he told the small his farewell event at Joint Base Andrews before boarding Air Force One with wife Melania for the last time.

Florida Republican wants to name highway after Trump

Anthony Sabatini tweeted that he will sponsor an amendment to call US Highway 27 the “President Donald J Trump Highway”.

“Looking forward to working on this important designation honoring one of the greatest Presidents in American History,” he said.

Much like the length of road itself, the idea is likely to split Florida straight down the middle.

Biden gets Trump officials to resign in first act on inauguration day

Joe Biden has asked surgeon general Jerome Adams to resign as his administration begins on Wednesday, in what has been billed as a reboot of the US government’s pandemic response.

Mr Adams, who has served as the surgeon general since 2017, announced his resignation at the Biden administration’s request, and said it had “been the honor of my life to serve”.

He and Michel Pack, the chief executive of the state-run US Agency for Global Media (USAGM), are among those Trump administration officials asked to resign by Mr Biden - with more expected to follow.

Stephen Miller attacks Joe Biden’s immigration policy

Donald Trump’s former senior adviser Stephen Miller used his first tweet to attack Joe Biden’s immigration policy.

“Today, (Joe Biden) pledged to be a president for all Americans. It’s unclear how all Americans are served by opening travel from terror hot spots, proposing a giant amnesty, or halting the installation of security barriers along the Southwest border,” he tweeted.

What would a new ‘Patriot Party’ run by Trump mean for US politics?

For Independent Premium, Sean O'Grady looks how previous attempts have fared.

“Will it work? Recent Trump fundraising, amounting to some $250m (£180m) since election day, suggests money would not be a problem, even if Trump didn’t use any of his own fortune. It is possible that he could attract defectors from the Republicans at all levels – state legislators and officials, federal representatives senators, advisers, ex-staffers and so on. He certainly does have a constituency, and he might well marry his new movement to a social media presence of his own, and ally to a sympathetic broadcast news outfit such as OANN (One America News Network).”

What would a new ‘Patriot Party’ run by Trump mean for US politics?

Trump has repeatedly insisted that he will be ‘back in some form’ and is rumoured to be considering starting his own political party. Sean O'Grady looks back at how previous threats to America’s two-horse race have fared

Mitt Romney attacks Trump’s pardons for ‘cronies’

Senator Romney is calling for reform after Donald Trump gave clemency to 143 people before leaving office.

These included Mr Trump’s former strategist Steve Bannon, one of his top fundraisers Elliott Broidy, as well as a string of former and convicted Congressman.

"I can't imagine the founders in providing for pardon power for a president anticipated that presidents would use it to reward political friends, and as a result I would hope that we could develop a tradition of more narrowly providing pardons," said Mr Romney.

And he added that a president should not be “providing them to people who are cronies or political individuals.”

Mr Trump did not pardon himself or any family members in the late spree.

Opinion: The Trump family made it clear they won’t go without a fight – even if that means a ridiculous one

For Independent Voices, Clémence Michallon is under no illusion that the Trump children will disappear from the public eye, even as their father leaves the presidency, kicking and screaming.

"Of course they won’t. They will keep reinforcing the Maga brand, trying to retain a grasp on its supporters, and so on and so forth. They will make a play for political power themselves. They will, perhaps, back a 2024 bid by the father (if he somehow comes out of his second Senate impeachment trial smelling of roses). But today, they are out of the White House. Today, we savour."

Opinion: Trump never understood what made America great — and Biden’s inauguration proved that

For Independent Voices, Richard Hall remembers Donald Trump’s reelection campaign in full swing:

“A not insignificant number of serious people believed he might succeed in stealing the election, or in bringing the country down with him. Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar disagreed. She believed America and its institutions were strong enough to withstand his onslaught. She was concerned, however, that the president had damaged the fundamental idea of what America was.”

Trump never understood what made America great — Biden’s inauguration proved that

The 45th president campaigned on a promise to make America great again — but, as Ilhan Omar once told me, he never truly understood what made America great in the first place
