Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Donald Trump has been accused of 26 further counts of sexual misconduct in a forthcoming new book, All the President's Women by Barry Levine and Monique El-Faizy, which recounts him hiding behind a tapestry in order to allegedly molest a woman at his resort at Mar-a-Lago in Florida in one instance.

The president's refusal to co-operate with the impeachment inquiry into his dealings with Ukraine - which he accidentally branded a “Wirch Hunt” on Twitter – has prompted House speaker Nancy Pelosi to hit back, reminding the president: “You are not above the law. You will be held accountable.”

The White House issued an eight-page letter to House Democrats late on Tuesday denouncing its investigation into whistleblower allegations that Mr Trump attempted to extort dirt on a domestic political rival from a foreign power as “constitutionally invalid”, after blocking US ambassador to the EU Gordon Sondland from appearing on Capitol Hill earlier in the day to give his version of events.

Later on during the day on Wednesday, Mr Trump defended the wife of a US diplomat who killed a British teenager, saying that it can be difficult for Americans to get used to driving on the left side of the road.

Mr Trump also downplayed the historical significance of the Kurdish forces currently being bombed by Turkey in Syria, saying that they did not help the United States during the Second World War.

He also continued to fight back against impeachment concerns, saying that Democrats leading the investigation into him and his actions should themselves be impeached.

Can rogue Republican senator and 2012 presidential candidate Mitt Romney "bring Trump down" as he has promised?

Chris Riotta digs deep.

For Indy Voices, Patrick Cockburn says the Kurds of the Syrian Democratic Forces always knew Trump would betray them.

In the last hour, Trump has gone all caps to decry the grand folly of US interventionist foreign policy in the Middle East (he might well have a point there), called the Democrats "Con Artists" (less convincing) and again attacked the whistleblower, this time with regard to The New York Times's latest reporting on the Zelensky call.

Trump has been accused of a further 26 incidents of "inappropriate sexual contact", including an accusation that he hid behind a tapestry to grope a woman at his Mar-a-Lago property in Florida.

The claims are featured in a new book, All the President's Women: Donald Trump and the Making of a Predator, by Barry Levine and Monique El-Faizy, the first excerpt of which has been published by Esquire magazine.

Chris Riotta has this.

Former South Carolina congressman Trey Gowdy may join Trump's impeachment defence team.

If he does, this clip from 2012 deserves to come back to haunt him.

Incidentally, here's a vintage clip of Lindsey Graham, another staunch critic of the inquiry, doing exactly the same thing over the Clinton affair in 1998.

In the interest of fairness, here's Eric Trump playing the same game with Jerrold Nadler, now House Judiciary Committee chairman.

Trump is now back to slamming the Federal Reserve and attempting to paper over the cracks in the Republican Party, increasingly uncomfortable about defending him in the face of mounting evidence and erratic behaviour.

He has an extremely light schedule today, which means tweets. God help us.

Amazingly, Turkey seems to be completely ignoring Senator Graham...

...and doing exactly what it was expected to do, sending out the jets to bomb America's erstwhile allies in the SDF now that Trump has ordered his own military to stand down, having suddenly decided "endless wars" are a waste of life and money and loyalty worth little immediately after taking a phone call from Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Florida Republican senator Marco Rubio has meanwhile belatedly joined in the condemnation of Trump's move.

Richard Hall has the latest.

The trouble with handing on your name to your son is that it just looks like you're talking to yourself when you comment on their tweets.

Plenty more conspiracy-minded posts being blasted out from @realDonaldTrump in the last half hour, featuring Don Jr, Maria Bartiromo, Jim Jordan and Laura Ingraham.

Hard to disagree with this assessment of the president's latest tweet.

God, make it stop.

Bernie Sanders has concluded he will have to scale back his campaign after visiting a cardiologist in his home state of Vermont yesterday in the wake of his heart attack last week.

I think we’re going to change the nature of the campaign a bit. Make sure that I have the strength to do what I have to do.

The candidate admitted on Tuesday said he was "dumb" to ignore the warning signs while out on the road.

His family has also just suffered a tragic bereavement: Bernie's daughter-in-law Raine Riggs has passed away of neuroendocrine cancer, aged just 46.
