Donald Trump promises to cure cancer

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Scuffles broke out after protesters waving an “Immigrants Built America” banner disrupted Donald Trump’s latest rally, where he continued his racist attacks on congressman Eljiah Cummings, the City of Baltimore, and "the squad".

The demonstrators held up the US president’s speech for nearly four minutes before they were kicked out of the event in Cincinnati, Ohio. But, the moment was only blip in the president's campaign rally where he offered up a flawed understanding of American immigration policy, trashed the idea of an independent judiciary, and slammed California for having homeless people and poverty.

Mr Trump, who appeared to make an obscene gesture as they left, also promised to cure childhood cancer, mocked FBI investigator Robert Mueller and boasted about the trade war with China – despite warnings from one of his former advisors, Gary Cohn, that it is damaging the US economy.

The latest in the battle over Donald Trump's tax returns is good news for the president: A judge has temporarily blocked New York from sharing his tax returns, after the state passed a law last month to allow that disclosure.

Federal judge Carl Nichols, an appointee of the president, paused the release on Thursday, but set a schedule for New York attorneys to lay down their argument that the federal court actually has no jurisdiction over the matter.

The taxes are being sought by Democrats in Congress.

In New York City, the owner of an art gallery says he was attacked by a group of teenagers for wearing a MAGA hat.

The owner, Jahangir "John" Turan, told NBC's New York affiliate that he was attacked while walking on the street after the hat was "flipped" off of his head. When he reached down to pick it up, he said the group of 18- to 20-year-olds "started pounding" him.

He said the attack included smashing his head against a pole, and that they yelled "f--- Trump" during the attack.

The NYPD confirmed the attack, but did not make mention of anti-Trump sentiment being involved.

In 2020 news, conservative Fox Nation commentator and host Tomi Lahren has apologised for comments she made during this week's debates, when she questioned whether Kamala Harris slept her way "to the top" — instead of earning the success the California senator has seen.

Ms Lahren was referencing Ms Harris's past relationship with former San Francisco mayor Willie Brown in the mid-1990s. Mr Brown has said he helped her career.

"Kamala did you fight for ideals or did you sleep your way to the top with Willie Brown?" Ms Lahren tweeted during the debates.

She later doubled down on her attacks on Ms Harris — who was California's attorney general before becoming a US senator — but apologised in the end:

In the Kentucky Senate race, Mitch McConnell is going on the offensive to fight against his democratic challenger, Amy McGrath.

In advert campaign blitz, Mr McConnell attacks his opponent for her "extreme" record on abortion, and feature a clip of the Democvrat from a 2018 fundraiser bragging about her liberal bona fides.

"I am further left, I am more progressive, than anybody in the state of Kentucy," Ms McGrath can be heard saying in the clip.

In response, the McGrath campaign plans on releasing its own attack adverts, claiming the clip is "doctored.

"This is Amy McGrath, and you might have heard Mitch McConnell's ad using my voice, where it sounds like I say I'm further left than anyone in Kentucky. But it's doctored audio. He cut off half the sentence," Ms McGrath is heard saying in the advert, a copy of which was provided to The Hill.
