Donald Trump lashed out at the Supreme Court after they ruled the ex-president must hand over his tax records to the Manhattan district attorney, paving the way for a New York grand jury to review his financial records.

The move served as a post-presidency defeat to Trump, who has for years battled to keep his tax records private, and paves the way for a New York grand jury to review his long-sought financial records.

In a long-form response posted to Gab, Trump said it was a continuation of his "political persecution" that wasn't justice, but was "fascism".

It came as Joe Biden announced he would lower flags at half-mast for five days to mark the US Crossing half a million Covid deaths, almost 90,000 of which have occurred in the month since he took office. Biden held a moment of silence and candle lighting ceremony at the White House on Monday night to mark the grim milestone.

Key stories:

Trump made $1.6bn while president, report says

Donald Trump made as much as $1.6bn during his four years as president according to a report by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW).

Having reviewed the former president’s financial disclosures, the group claims that while Mr Trump took credit for donating his official salary, funded by US taxpayers, that was a tiny fraction of the revenue earned through Trump businesses during his presidency.

CREW calculates that even after seeing a major dropoff in hospitality-related revenue in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, in total Mr Trump disclosed at least $1,613,583,013 in revenue from the Trump Organization and other outside income.

At the high end, he disclosed $1,790,614,202, but the disclosure forms are vague with some assets listed as “Over $5,000,000” in yearly income.

New Jersey becomes 15th US state to fully legalise marijuana

A 15th US state has fully legalised recreational marijuana, after New Jersey governor Phil Murphy on Monday finalised a much-debated cannabis package that voters had approved in November.

“As of this moment, New Jersey’s broken and indefensible marijuana laws which permanently stained the records of many residents and short-circuited their futures, and which disproportionately hurt communities of colour and failed the meaning of justice at every level, social or otherwise — are no more,” Mr Murphy said during a briefing on Monday.

Josh Marcus reports.

ICYMI: Trump blames Cuomo for 'fascist witch-hunt' into his tax returns after SCOTUS ruling

Donald Trump claims the Manhattan District Attorney's efforts to obtain his tax returns is the "greatest political Witch Hunt in the history of our County."

Cy Vance, the Manhattan District Attorney, has been investigating potential financial crimes committed by the Trump Organisation. Specifically, the investigators are trying to determine whether or not the Trump Organisation artificially inflates the values of its properties to secure loans.

Mr Trump claimed that Mr Vance was just focusing on him to advance his career and accused New York City Governor Andrew Cuomo of inspiring the investigation.

“It is all Democrat-inspired in a totally Democrat location, New York City and State, completely controlled and dominated by a heavily reported enemy of mine, Governor Andrew Cuomo,” Trump wrote.

The Independent’s Graig Graziosi has more from today’s big Trump story.
