From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

President Joe Biden has backed his Office of Management and Budget director nominee Neera Tanden after a vote confirming her appointment has been delayed.

Ms Tanden - who previously worked for President Barack Obama - has faced criticism from Republicans over her previous comments on social media and statements about Mitch McConnell.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said the administration didn’t see it as a setback, and that they were continuing to fight for her nomination. “It’s a numbers game, right, it’s a matter of getting one Republican to support her nomination. We’re continuing to do that outreach,” she said.

It comes as Psaki defended the Biden administration’s reopening of a migrant facility for children after Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez joining the GOP in strongly criticising the move. Taking to Twitter, AOC said: “This is not okay, never has been okay, never will be okay - no matter the administration or party.”

Mr Biden has previously called the child camps on the US-Mexico border “horrific” and promised during his 2020 election campaign to end the use of the facilities but The Washington Post reports that one centre in Texas is being reopened due to capacity issues at other facilities caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, veteran Utah Republican senator predicts that Mr Biden’s predecessor in the Oval Office would win the 2024 presidential nomination for the GOP, if he chose to run. “I don’t know if he’ll run in 2024 or not, but if he does, I’m pretty sure he will win the nomination,” Mr Romney told The New York Times.

If he does run, Trump may get the band back together. GOP rep Jim Banks says a group of conservative lawmakers met with Mike Pence to discuss a political action group to defend the Trump-Pence record. "He spoke very favourably about his relationship with President Trump," Banks told CNN. "I got the sense they speak often.”

Sean Hannity takes shot at Biden’s ‘late’ Texas visit after supporting Ted Cruz’s Mexican vacation

The Fox News star attacked the president for being too late in traveling to Texas just days after defending Senator Ted Cruz for leaving on a Mexican vacation as millions of his constituents were without power, heat and water.

“A LITTLE LATE: Biden, First Lady to Tour ‘Frozen Texas’ as Temps Rise to a Pleasant 77 Degrees,” tweeted Mr Hannity as Mr Biden and the first lady flew to Houston.

But that was not his view last week when Ted Cruz came under withering criticism for going on vacation with his family at the height of the winter crisis.

“You made the right call coming back. You also can be a father,” Mr Hannity told Mr Cruz on his Fox News Show on 19 February.

“There’s also something called technology. We also know what teleworking is. And I think there’s a lot of sanctimony and politics being played in this attack.”

Biden will take no action against MBS after intelligence report finds Saudi leader responsible for murder of journalist

The Biden administration will take no direct action against Saudi Arabia’s crown prince Mohammad bin Salman following the release of a US intelligence assessment that concluded he approved the operation to murder journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

The long awaited report was released by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence on Friday, more than two years after dissident Khashoggi was murdered by a hit squad at the Saudi embassy in Istanbul.

Biden administration planning another tented facility for migrants in Texas

The federal government will open the facility in Del Rio, Texas, to expand processing capability for children and women on the US-Mexico border, according to CNN.

In January, more than 5,800 unaccompanied children and nearly 7,500 families were taken into custody by Customs and Border Protection at the southern border.

Earlier this month CBP announced it was opening a “soft-sided” structure in Donna, Texas, to increase capacity.

The Biden administration has rejected conservative claims they are continuing the separation policy of Donald Trump with their use of detention facilities.

American taxpayers are funding the defence for US Capitol rioters, report says

The Justice Department has charged about 275 people so far for their alleged involvement in the deadly US Capitol riots that occurred on 6 January, an official told CBS News.

This came after Americans watched supporters of Donald Trump storm the Capitol building with the intent to cause destruction and pressure lawmakers, including former Vice President Mike Pence, who they believed were not stopping a “fraudulent” presidential election.

Danielle Zoellner has the story.

DNC reportedly asked host Julia Louis-Dreyfus to tone down act, fearing Biden ‘dementia’ reminders

Democratic National Convention chief program executive, Stephanie Cutter, reportedly asked for host Julie Louis-Dreyfus to tone down her 2020 DNC act, according to an excerpt from the forthcoming book, LUCKY: How Joe Biden Barely Won the Presidency.

The excerpt from Jonathan Allen’s book printed in Vanity Fair describes how Cutter demanded that Veep showrunner David Mandel, who was writing a script for the show’s fictional VP, cut a joke about how Biden understood hard work and struggle, whereas “the only time Donald Trump has struggled is walking down a ramp and trying to drink a glass of water”.
