From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

After Donald Trump gave a surprise speech at his Mar-a-Lago estate over the weekend, his supporters gushed over how strong and healthy they thought the former president looked. Jimmy Kimmel, however, disagreed.

“He looks like a bowl of mashed potatoes in pants,” the host quipped on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday.

Mr Trump made his impromptu speech on Friday at an event for Big Dog Ranch Rescue, a charity that his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, has worked with in the past.

“What you’re doing is so important and so great and so important and I’m with you 100 per cent," the ex-president said, wearing his signature red cap and white polo shirt. “We had many meetings in the White House and the Oval Office having to do with saving and helping dogs.”

The Mar-a-Lago audience cheered, and soon a few supporters took to Twitter to marvel at how robust they thought Mr Trump looked.

“President Trump is looking better than ever before!!” one tweeted. “He’s getting in shape for 2024 and the liberals are freaking out!!”

“President Trump looks fantastic and stronger than ever!” another wrote.

Mr Kimmel was unconvinced.

“I get that you support Donald Trump, but put that picture back up for a second,” he said in his monologue. “He doesn’t look strong and he definitely doesn’t look fantastic. He looks like an old man with his belt pulled up to his nips.”

The comedian was also suspicious of the charity event itself. Big Dog Ranch Rescue has paid about $1.9 million to Florida properties owned by Mr Trump, and paid another $225,000 at Mar-a-Lago over the weekend.

“There was a big story last week about how Trump’s daughter-in-law, Lara – she of the plump lips – was event chairwoman for a charity called Big Dog Ranch Rescue, and this charity paid almost $2 million to Mar-a-Lago, which is owned by guess-who over the past seven years,” Mr Kimmel said. “That doesn’t sound suspicious at all.”

Lara Trump is the wife of Eric Trump, the former president’s son.

Twitter had some fun with the “Trump looks fantastic” comments as well, pairing the complimentary quotes with images of zombies and even one of an embalmed Vladimir Lenin.
