On the same day that the presidential candidates should have clashed, would-be moderator Steve Scully was suspended by his employer C-Span after seeking advice from an anti-Trump activist and lying about it when confronted.
Instead, Savannah Guthrie, co-anchor of NBC News’s Today show, hosted the Trump town hall in Miami while ABC News' chief anchor, George Stephanopoulos, hosted Biden in Philadelphia.
Trump facing backlash over comments on US Marshalls killing Antifa activist
But not for the right reasons.
Among the many zingers from Trump’s North Carolina rally was his bragging about US Marshalls killing the Antifa activist wanted for killing one of the president’s supports.
He received a deluge of criticism after a clip went viral on Twitter suggesting the US Marshalls didn’t want to arrest Michael Reinoehl before they shot and killed him during an attempted arrest.
But this truncated the full quote, which provides much-needed context as to who the president was referencing. In its entirety, Trump says:
"We want to go to Portland so bad, that one would take 15 minutes to set, 15 minutes, and the man that shot another innocent man, this was an innocent man shot, killed instantly killed. I said what happened: 'well we haven't arrested him'. Two days, three days went by. We sent in the US marshals, took 15 minutes it was over, 15 minutes it was over, we got him. They knew who he was, they didn't want to arrest him, and 15 minutes that ended."
From that full context, he is referencing the local authorities, as also pointed out by New York Times reporter Evan Chill, who this week published an investigation on Mr Reinoehl’s shooting, raising questions as to whether US Marshalls fully identified themselves before the shooting.
The president did, however, still celebrate the death of Mr Reinoehl before he was able to face trial.

Donald Trump claimed that suburban women love being called “housewives” as he begged them to help him get reelected

C-SPAN suspends Scully after he admits to lie about hack
C-SPAN suspended its political editor Steve Scully indefinitely Thursday after he admitted to lying about his Twitter feed being hacked when he was confronted about a questionable exchange with former Trump aide Anthony Scaramucci.
The news came on the day of what was supposed to be a career highlight for the 30-year C-SPAN veteran. Scully was to moderate the second debate between President Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden, which was canceled after Trump would not agree to a virtual format because of his COVID-19 diagnosis.
A week ago, after Trump had criticized him as a “never Trumper,” Scully tweeted “@Scaramucci should I respond to Trump.” Scaramucci, a former Trump communications director and now a critic of the president, advised Scully to ignore him.
Scully said that when he saw his tweet had created a controversy, “I falsely claimed that my Twitter account had been hacked.”
He had been frustrated by Trump’s comments and several weeks of criticism on social media and conservative news outlets about his role as moderator, including attacks directed at his family, he said.
“These were both errors in judgement for which I am totally responsible for,” Scully said. “I apologize.”
He said he let down his colleagues at C-SPAN, fellow news professionals and the debate commission. “I ask for their forgiveness as I try to move forward in a moment of reflection and disappointment in myself,” he said.
C-SPAN said Scully confessed to lying about the hack on Wednesday. - AP
BREAKING: White House was told Russia targeted Giuliani to feed misinformation to Trump, report says
The White House was warned by US intelligence agencies last year that Rudolph Giuliani was targetted by Russia to feed misinformation to Donald Trump.
Reporting by The Washington Post, based on information from four former officials familiar with the matter, says that the president’s personal lawyer interacted with individuals tied to Russian intelligence during his December 2019 visit to Ukraine.
The warnings from the intelligence services to the White House led national security adviser Robert O’Brien to caution Trump that information brought back from Ukraine by Mr Giuliani should be considered contaminated by Russia, according to one of the officials.
