A suspect in custody after shooting an employee at a Miami apartment building and then setting the complex on fire.

Dozens of firefighters descended on a four-storey apartment complex on Monday morning to comabt the blaze, which resulted in scores of residents to be evacuated.

First responders arrived at the building after receiving calls about a fire around 8:15 am, and began rescuing residents from the building’s balconies, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez said during a news conference.

A man was also found at the scene with gunshot wounds and taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Suarez later said it is believed that the suspect shot an employee then intentionally set the fire. The individual’s name has not been released and police investigations are ongoing.

Shortly before 6pm local time the City of Miami Fire Department announced that the fire was “under control.”

Housing management issues statement on shot employee

Police said that a suspect had been arrested after a man was shot in the Temple Courts Apartment.

The suspect is also believed to have set the fire intentionally, authorities said, though no further information was released.

Following the news, Atlantic Housing Management, who manages the apartment complex, confirmed the man who was shot was an employee.

“We are very saddened to confirm that this morning, June 10, 2024, one of our Temple Court employees was shot and taken to a nearby hospital where he is currently being treated,” a statement from the organization said.

“Two buildings also experienced a fire and firefighters are actively working to put it out. We are still determining the cause of these events, and we are checking for other injuries. Police are investigating, and we will help in whatever ways we can.

“We are working with the Red Cross, which has brought drinks and snacks to help our displaced residents. We are also working to provide meals and a place to stay for those who have been affected.

“We will update as we have more information. We are grieved by all that has happened today, and our thoughts and prayers are with our team member and his family and residents of the Temple Court community.”

Miami apartment building fire under control after eight hours

Just before 6pm local time the Miami Fire Department announced that the incident was under control.

In a post on X, the department said that all residents were accounted for and that its units were being released.
