From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. President Donald Trump is making his way down Constitution Avenue with a military escort as his inauguration parade begins in Washington.

The president will review the parade from a viewing stand near the White House.

He and first lady Melania Trump are riding in the presidential limousine nicknamed "The Beast."

Trump is being cheered by supporters as his car passes.

Others are shouting "Media sucks" while a group of protesters chants, "Not my president, not my president."

Earlier Mr Trump — in brief remarks at his inaugural lunch at the Capitol — said he was honoured that Hillary Clinton, his rival in the White House race, came to the event.

The bipartisan crowd of lawmakers and other dignitaries gave Clinton a standing ovation after Trump asked her to rise.

Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, sat with members of Trump's family at the event.

Trump ended by saying he has "a lot of respect for those two people."

Mr Trump was named the 45th President of the United States at midday on Friday. His inauguration was met with protests across Washington DC.

Good morning and welcome to our coverage of the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United States. He will be sworn in at noon local time - 5pm GMT - make his inaugural address and listen to readings by religious leaders before the parade starts.

The effects of Mr Trump's divisive campaign continue to be felt across America, as angry protests continue leading up to the inauguration.

The incoming President's supporters clashed with demonstrators outside a pro-Trump event in Washington overnight, with police using pepper spray on the crowds.

Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the National Press Club, where the “DeploraBall” was being held. The name is a play on a campaign remark by Hillary Clinton, who once referred to many of Trump's supporters as a “basket of deplorables.”

Protesters booed as presumed ball-goers in suits, tuxedos or dresses came in or out of the event.

One man waving a pro-Trump flag had debris thrown at him and was chased to the nearby Warner Theater.

Speaking last night, Donald Trump and his family attended a celebratory "Make America Great Again Welcome Concert".

He told supporters he was elected because people wanted "real change" and called the movement behind him "very special". He praised his incoming White House consellor, Kellyanne Conway, who is also celebrating her 50th birthday today.

Protests have been taking place around the world ahead of Donald Trump's inauguration.

In the Philippines, activists burned burned a US flag as they urged Rodrigo Duterte to keep his promise of charting a foreign policy independent of America by staying away from the US President.

They held up signs, including one that read “Donald Trump don't mess with the Philippines.”

Russian officials and politicians are lauding Donald Trump's inauguration as a start of what they hope will be a period of better ties with the United States.

The incoming President's promises to fix the ravaged relations with Moscow have elated Russia's political elite amid spiraling tensions with Washington over the wars in Syria and Ukraine.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said that while it's not clear what course Mr Trump will take after the inauguration, “we are ready to do our share of the work in order to improve the relationship.”
