Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Kim Potter, the white police officer who shot and killed Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, during a traffic stop on Sunday has been charged with manslaughter.
A GoFundMe campaign for a memorial fund for Mr Wright has raised over half a million dollars towards covering funeral and providing support for his family.
Minneapolis faced its third night of civil unrest on Tuesday after the killing, which occurred in the suburb of Brooklyn Center. Tensions are already high amid the trial of Derek Chauvin, the white former Minneapolis police officer charged with murdering George Floyd, an unarmed Black man, last May.
Both Ms Potter and Brooklyn Center police chief Tim Gannon resigned on Tuesday. In body camera footage, Ms Potter appears to mistakenly withdraw her pistol when trying to pull out her Taser.
Mr Wright’s mother delivered a striking eulogy on Tuesday, praising him as both a father and a son, and saying she had no idea how she will manage without him.
“I just need everyone to know that he is much more than this. He had a smile that was angelic,” said Katie Wright, at a vigil attended by hundreds of people.

The trial is done for the day: Will Derek Chauvin testify?
That’s all for court for today.
Dr David Fowler, a forensic pathologist, was on the stand the entire time for the defence.
He ultimately said there so many different factors in play during Mr Floyd’s death—drugs, pre-existing heart problems, potential exposure to carbon monoxide, police restraints—that the cause of death was “undetermined.”
Judge Peter Cahill has said the case should wrap up this week or next Monday, so it seems unlikely Derek Chauvin will take the stand.
ICYMI: Defence argues George Floyd’s death wasn’t a homicide
The cause of George Floyd’s death should considered “undetermined,” rather than a murder by police, a forensic pathologist testified in the Derek Chauvin murder trial on Wednesday.
A confluence of different factors—fentanyl intoxication, pre-existing heart disease, potential exposure to carbon monoxide from a police car’s tailpipe, and officers’ restraints—all had an impact on Mr Floyd’s death, argued Dr David Fowler, former Maryland chief medical examiner and an expert witness for the defense.
“When you put all of those together, it’s very difficult to say which of those is most accurate,” Mr Fowler said, as part of his day-long turn on the witness stand. “I would fall back to ‘undetermined’ in this particular case.” Here’s a recap of Wednesday’s proceedings.
