Boulder shooting: Biden calls for immediate gun control action as details on suspected shooter emerge

Colorado governor Jared Polis said in a statement about the Boulder shooting that “today we saw the face of evil.”

He said that “this year we have been surrounded by loss of life, illness and isolation, and the deep grief that has accompanied the loss of life as we know it.”

Mr Polis said he is grieving with his community and all Coloradans.

Ryan Borowski, who was inside the King Soopers store on Monday, told CNN that he nearly got killed for getting a soda and a bag of chips. 

He said he and the people around him started running after hearing the third loud sound. 

“We told employees what was going on so everybody helped each other and we just ran to safety as quickly as we could,” Mr Borowski told CNN. 

He said that “Boulder feels like a bubble and the bubble burst and that’s heartbreaking. To think that people died today.”

Ten people were killed in the mass shooting on Monday, including a police officer. 

Reacting to the Colorado shooting, majority leader Chuck Schumer said the Senate “must and will move forward on legislation to help stop the epidemic of gun violence.”

He also said that the situation in Boulder is being closely monitored. 

The shooting at the King Soopers store in Colorado is the seventh mass killing this year in the US.

Last week, eight people were killed in shootings at three Atlanta-area spas. Seven of the eight killed were women and six people were of Asian descent. 

Representative Lauren Boebert’s campaign reportedly sent out an email on Monday afternoon to her supporters, urging them to say “Hell No” to “taking our guns.”

The email came two hours after news emerged of a mass shooting at a Colorado store that left 10 people dead.  

Journalist David Gura tweeted screenshots of the email. “I told Beto ‘HELL NO’ to taking our guns. Now we need to tell Joe Biden,” the email subject read. 

Ms Boebert was earlier criticised for tweeting about President Biden as police rushed to respond to the shooting. 

She later tweeted about the mass shooting, saying that “random public shootings and senseless acts of violence are never ok.”

Police officer Eric Talley, who is among 10 dead in the shooting at the Boulder store, had been looking for a new job to protect his family, his father Homer said.

“He was looking for a job to keep himself off of the front lines and was learning to be a drone operator. He didn’t want to put his family through something like this,” he said, according to Reuters.

Officer Talley was the first to respond to the scene of the shooting on Monday afternoon.

A man who livestreamed the shooting at a supermarket in Boulder, Colorado is receiving both criticism and praise for his actions, with some saying he exhibited bravery while others argued he walked past victims and posed a security risk.

Dean Schiller, who identified himself as a citizen journalist, was at the spot when the shooting began at King Soopers on Monday, and he began filming the incident on his cellphone and streaming it to his YouTube channel ZFG Videography. His feed drew over 30,000 viewers during the livestream.
