From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn clashed over Brexit at the first Prime Minister’s Questions since the parliamentary recess.

The Labour leader mocked David Davis' assurances that Brexit will not result in a "Mad Max-style world borrowed from dystopian fiction", and asked the Prime Minister if the Government could set the bar "just a little bit higher".

Ms May reiterated her desire for a "bespoke economic partnership" with the EU amid renewed pressure from her own party as more than 60 Tory MPs signalled they could remove their support if Ms May tried to pursue a softer Brexit.

The powerful European Research Group - led by arch eurosceptic Jacob Rees-Mogg - intervened ahead of crunch Cabinet talks on Thursday where the Prime Minister will strive to unite warring factions over the future relationship with the EU.

It comes as the Government asked the EU to consider granting the UK a longer Brexit transition period than the one proposed by Brussels.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt is now making a statement about a review into the safety of medicines and medical devices, including Primodos, vaginal mesh and sodium valproate.

There are three areas of "potential medication error where serious concerns have been raised by patients and their families", he said.

Primodos, a pregnancy test drug, which was prescribed to 1.5m women in 1970s.

Sodium Valproate, an anti-epilepsy drug, definitively linked to autism. Up to 20,000 children may be affected.

Vaginal mesh, which has brought on life-changing complications for many women.

He said: "Our first thought are with the individuals and families whose lives have been turned upside down by these issues.

"Many have endured and continue to endure severe complications and a tremendous amount of pain, distress and ill health, alongside the feeling that their complaints have not reached a satisfactory resolution."

Hunt said: "We must acknowledge that the response to these issues from those in positions of authority has not always been good enough.

"Sometimes the reaction has felt overly focused on defending the status quo rather than addressing the needs of patients, as a result patients and their families have felt too long feeling like they have not been listened to making the agony of a complex medical condition even worse."

On Primodos, he says families will be offered a full genetic clinical evaluation, better training for doctors, better information for families.

On Sodium Valproate, he said there will be new guidance, a new warning label on medicines and stronger alerts across pharmacy systems.

On Vaginal mesh, he said a full ban was "not the right answer on the basis of evidence available". Announces a retrospective audit on the outcomes.
