From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Boris Johnson has carried out the most brutal cabinet reshuffle in modern history as he sacked more than half of Theresa May's top team within hours of taking charge.

Allies of Ms May were unceremoniously cleared out, with rival Jeremy Hunt was among the senior figures to leave the government in favour of Brexiteers.

Sajid Javid was appointed as chancellor, with Brexiteers Priti Patel and Dominic Raab returning to the cabinet as home secretary and foreign secretary.

Boris Johnson's reshuffle is shaping up to be the most brutal without a change of party in No 10. Hardly any May era ministers remain.

Our first appointment - Sajid Javid is chancellor. It's a promotion for the home secretary, who stood against Boris Johnson in the Tory leadership contest.

He becomes the first chancellor from an ethnic minority background - and will be a popular choice amongst Tory MPs.

Priti Patel has been named as the home secretary, in a major promotion.

She was enjoyed a spell on the backbenches after being sacked as international development secretary for conducting meetings with Israeli officials while on holiday.

Brexiteer Dominic Raab has been named as foreign secretary.Raab is also First Secretary of State - which is effectively a deputy to the PM

Sajid Javid self-identifies as the son of a bus driver, whose father arrived in England from Pakistan in the 1960s with just a pound in his pocket.

To colleagues, he is The Saj - the tough talking home secretary whose hard stance on jihadi bride Shamima Begum's pleas to be allowed back in the UK boosted his popularity among some Tories, but horrified others - particularly after Begum's newborn son later died in a Syrian refugee camp.

The Bromsgrove MP made it to the final four in the leadership race and subsequently endorsed Mr Johnson.

His background as a managing director of Deutsche Bank was seen as part of his credentials for No 11.

One of the big ticket announcements - Priti Patel named as home secretary.

Ben Wallace, a long-time Johnson ally, has been promoted to Defence Secretary after Jeremy Hunt turned it down.

Mr Wallace was previously the security minister and has a military background - serving in Northern Ireland, Germany and Central America.
