Nottingham attack – latest: Man charged with murder after brutal knife attack

The Crown Prosecution Service has issued a new statement following Tuesday’s attacks in Nottingham.

It confirmed it has authorised Nottinghamshire police to charge 31-year-old Valdo Calocane with three counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder, with the first hearing in the case due on Saturday 17 June at Nottingham Magistrates Court.

Suzanne Llewellyn, Chief Crown Prosecutor of CPS East Midlands said: “Following the events in Nottingham on Tuesday 13 June 2023, the Crown Prosecution Service has today authorised Nottinghamshire police to charge Valdo Calocane, 31, with three counts of murder and three of attempted murder.

“The CPS made the decision after reviewing a file of evidence relating to the events in the city of Nottingham in the early hours of Tuesday morning, where two students and a school caretaker lost their lives and three others were injured.

“Our thoughts and sympathies are with the families and friends of all those involved in this tragic incident and we wish those still receiving care a speedy recovery.

“The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against Mr Calocane are active and that he has a right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”

Two students and a school caretaker killed in a knife and van rampage in Nottingham have been honoured by a moment’s silence ahead of the first Ashes test.

Talented 19-year-old students Grace O’Malley-Kumar and Barnaby Webber were found stabbed to death in Nottingham’s Ilkeston Road at around 4am on Tuesday.

The family of university student Barnaby Webber have visited the scene where he was stabbed to death.

The 19-year-old University of Nottingham student died alongside fellow undergraduate Grace O’Malley-Kumar in an incident on Tuesday in the city.

Mr Webber’s family said they laid flowers at the spot in Ilkeston Road because “we owe it to both Barnaby and Grace to let them know we are here”.

In a statement released to the PA news agency, his family, from Taunton, Somerset, said: “We chose to come to this dreadful space because we owe it to both Barnaby and Grace to let them know we are here.

“As has been expressed by so many already, heartbreak cannot begin to describe our loss.

The suspect in the Nottingham knife and van attacks is a former student of the University of Nottingham, the institution said in a statement.

The suspect allegedly killed three people in a brutal knife attack and then ran over three others with a stolen van.

According to multiple reports, the suspect was born in Guinea-Bissau, a country on West Africa’s coast.

He was arrested on Tuesday, following a 90-minute rampage in the early hours when two 19-year-old university students and a 65-year-old man were killed.

Suella Braverman has visited Nottingham to pay her respects to two students and a school caretaker who were killed in a deadly knife and van rampage in the city.

The home secretary joined Nottinghamshire’s Conservative Police and Crime Commissioner, Caroline Henry, to add her own floral tribute to the collection outside Nottingham’s Council House on Thursday 15 June.

She wrote a personal message to the victims’ families, saying: “We are with you.”

Floral tributes have been left at Djanogly Terrace, University of Nottingham, after three people were killed and another three hurt in Tuesday's attacks on 16 June.

Nottingham University students Barnaby Webber and Grace O Malley-Kumar, both aged 19, and school caretaker Ian Coates, 65, were stabbed to death on Tuesday morning, with the attacker going into the city centre and running over people with a stolen van.

A marked police car had sight of a van for “less than a minute” before it hit pedestrians during the Nottingham attacks.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said the driver of the single-crewed vehicle immediately stopped to give first aid after two people were struck in South Sherwood Street on Tuesday morning.

Valdo Calocane, 31, has been charged with three counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder after an alleged knife and van rampage in the city.

An IOPC spokesman said the watchdog will be contacting the two pedestrians hurt in the van collision to tell them of their decision to investigate the incident.

The heartbroken mothers of two students stabbed to death in the deadly Nottingham knife and van rampage have urged the city to “hold no hate” at an emotional vigil.

Thousands of people gathered in the city’s Market Square to pay their respects Grace O’Malley-Kumar, Barnaby Webber and Ian Coates – who were all fatally stabbed in Tuesday’s attacks.

Nottinghamshire Police said detectives were granted a further 36 hours to quiz a former University of Nottingham student after he was tasered and arrested on suspicion of murder.

On Thursday, crowds stretching back almost half a kilometre watched on with tears in their eyes as family members from all three victims delivered powerful, heart-wrenching tributes to their loved ones.
